All the men at work are, of’ course, friends and customers of our Honorable Member, who may be interested some way or other in the matter.

I have hitherto supported the so-called Liberal party; but from the manner in which the revenue of the country 1s ¢x- pended, and the utter incapacity of Our

own convictions, be a party to again give them a new lease of power.

A MILITIAMAN’S COMPLAINT.

Sir,—In your issue of some time ago, I saw wherein you gave, and rightly gave, credit to the Island batteries, and to the Charlottetown batteries in particular, for their efficiency displayed at their last inspection. But, sir, 1 think the inspec- tion of the Charlottetown companies was conducted under different principles to that of the rural companies, and I do not think it fair that they should be placed under the same category. For instance, the Charlottetown companies were allowed to perform their drill in the shed in Charlottetown. Not having to attend camp they were allowed to perform it‘in their civilian clothes, and when they pleased, thus keeping their uniforms bright and clean for inspection day, whereas the raral companies were obliged to perfurm their drill in camp in dusty weather, in uniform, coo up ina small place and with many other disadvantager; and they could not be expected to present as good an appearance as the others on inspection day. Again, the rural com-

camp that had the slightest inkling of the drill, the others, including the. much lauded Charlottetown . company,-« were perfectly ignorant of its nature, To a fair-minded on-looker it seems nothing but justice that all companies should have been inspected from a common basis. But I suppose, looking at it from an official point of view (justice being thrown aside) the inspector thought it would be degrading to have # rural company beat the city, and evolved an examination to sui'*the Charlottetown company. I write you this in order to show you that we have a live company keeping abreast of the times. and although we have no drill shed like the capitals of Kog’s and Queen’s, still in the late inspection notwithstanding the disadvantages above enumerated, as well as being short of Stwo officers—30 marks, ~we were ahead in camp, and only 28 marks behind the aggregate of your much lauded Charlottetown company. Hoping that you will give space to this hurried missive, and thet the companies may be judged alike in future, I am youre, VOLUNTEER,

Sir, — After perusing your leading article of the 7th inst, I looked up the official bank statements since July, and find that the Province was indebted te the Merchants Bank of P.E. Island on 3lst July last, $13,333; on 3let August last, $19,500, and on 3lat Sept. last, $28,397. When it is considered that the half yearly subsidy, the revenue from the Land office and other sources have also been spent— that there is also an enormous indebted- ness to the other banks, and that boodling i+ still rampant, ia it not time for the tax- payers to pause and think what is to be the outcome of the grit financial bungling ? I consider that Peters & Co. have lost their heads. Do they consider that a day of reckoning is at hand? Will they be able to gather in the vouchers of this ex- penditure fron: the offices of the lawyers and merchants who aré now engaged in distributing it? In 1881 the gross debt of Nova Scotia was $57,374; in 1892 it was $3,138,761. Thie Province is increasin its indebtedness in a greater ratio. President wipuelyte Says He Will Put Down bellion at any Cost,

The steamer Oranje Nasvau, from Haytian ports, arrived at New York on the 6th inst. On board was Albert Denisse, who isen route to France after making a tour of the principal towns of Hayti. Mr. Denisse said that two weeks ago the spies of President Hippolyte, of the Black. Republic, discovered a con- spiracy against the Government. ‘It had Its source among the chronic conspirators at Kingston, Ja,, Messrs. Managat, Legi- time and others. They had a number of agents at Port au Prince and other Haytian towns. The conspirators were laying an elaborate plan to seize the overnment and had enlisted a number o Englishmen in the plot. The latter went to Port au Prince and ostensibly engaged in business. Hippolyte, however, had his spies scattered around everywhere and they reported to him what was on foot. The President waited for a time and then took action, which resulted in suppressing the incipient revolt. Mr. Creswell, one of the Englishmen, received a visit from a government agent and was escorted to an English steamer and warned not to again set foot on Hayti. Several others were

also ordered out of the country. “On the fojlowing Sunday,” Mr. Denisse said, “President Hippolyte
