Quito a theme for any confer- cnce don't you think? Well. that's what the Summerstdo 0.0.1.1‘. conference had as it's theme when over one hundred girls registered on November 20th.

At l0 AM. Mrs. Robert Dewar c-E Summerstde started registering the delegates at the United Church.

The Borden group conducted the opening devotional and then the questionnaire was passed out to all present. When all questions were answered each girl went to irarious groups where the answers were discussed, Discussion on books, recreation, etc. was led by Mrs. RL, Cairns who is the Isad- cr of the Freetown C.G.I.T. min- loe Rackham, Wheatley River, led the period on "Friends" and Airs. 308811“, Borden. had a group dis- ousslon on the "Appreciation of Home, Church and Leaders." A general discussion on the quest- ionnaire was led by Miss Windsor Smith of Augustine Cove.

After lunch and a sing song. the midday devotional was led by thc eirls of the ‘Travellers Rest C.G.I.'I‘.

During a period of games led by Mrs. R. Cairuthers, the leaders held a "Leader's Forum" when problems were talked over and ideas exchanged.

Rest period followed after which reports of the discussion groups were heard.

MR. BERNARD J. COADY

ills relatives and a lesion of friends deeply mourn the death m‘ Bernard Coaily who peacefully passed away in the Charlottetown Hospital on Sunday. October 17th, 1048.

Bern, as he was familiarly known was born ln Vernon River on No- vember 26th, 1888 and spent his cn- tire life in that community.

llis first marriage was with Eva Acorn. This union was blessed with three daughters, Alice, Mil- dred and Myrtle. While these children were still too young lo realize their loss, their Mother was culled aura)‘ by death, inflicting the first serious cross of sorrow upon their l0\'lll§.fElIIlEl‘. He bore it ill patience and was rewarded within a few years by finding a true fos- ter Mother and loving companion in tlie person of Annie Qullty of South Shore, P. E. l. Together they worked and llvcd in as perfect a stale of happiness as can he ex- pected In this world. Toguse the ordinary phrase, "lie was rt kind and loving father" does scarcely be- gin to express his deep love for and his devotion to his wife and chilzl- rcn. Ills daughters regarded him as an ititimaic companion as well as a kind father. And not without good reason, because Bern was thc kindest and most cheerful of men. The testimony of all his neighbors often expressed during his lifetime and since his death, bears witness to the truth of this statement. His nearest neighbors and lifelong cont- panions "the 'l‘\vecdy’s" hurl never anything but good to say of him. By hanl unrk and thrift. he steali- ily improvcrl hi! farm home until it became one of thc best equipped in thc community.

On Friday evening, Nov. 28th. ihe Knutsford Women's institute celebrated its twentieth (30th) anniversary by a goose and chicken banquet at the home of its Presid- ent, Mrs. Robert Woodsids and Mr. Woodside. There were over seventy 170) guests present. The lovely dining room was gally de- curated for the occasion and the center of attraction on the two big tables were I\\'O appropriately de- corated birthday cakes. adorned wlth twenty candels. The ladies served marvellous meals in a man- ner that left nothing to be desired. The opening remarks of welcome to the members and guests were graciously given by the President of the Institute. Mrs. Robert Wood- side. Among the guests present were the first president of the Women's Institute. Mrs. Bayfteld Ellis and the first secretary. Mrs. Ivan Hardy, who were heard in short remarks. Appropriate re- marks were also given by Dr. George Dewar. Rev. C. O. Hewlett- Messrs. P. N Pate and Hayfield Ellis. One of the Charter Mem- bers, Mrs. Harvey Adams was able lo be present, after having been on the sick list for some consider- able time. a

The "IN AIEMORIAM" notice was feelingly given by Miss Ina Phillips and lovely Memorial Flowers were presented by Mrs. Beecher Smallman. Knutsford Women's’ Institute Celebrates Its Twentieth“ Anniversary

by the Supervisor. Misg Saunders on Nov. 28th i928 with thirteen members present. Four of this number, namely. Mrs. William Dymeni, Mrs. Thomas J. Harris, Mrs. Robert Woodside and Mrs. Beecher Bmallman have the unique distinction of having an unbroken membership for the past twenty years To these members we offer our hearhlest congratulations.

The measure of value in sny work is not how long but how well; twenty years in the life of an organization is an accomplish- ment in itself. Knutsford Institute has not only accomplished that honor but much more. It ha, filled each year with a record of deeds done for “Home and Country". Our organization serves with the other four hundred and eighty institutes dotted over our Island, a link between our past and future continuing our service with an un-

changing purpose in an ever changing world.

During the war years our In- stltutg members gave of their time and money unstlntingly in the work of the Red Cross. Although our Red Cron was a separate unit- every Institute membe was a Red Cross worker.

We have subscribed generously to such worthy objects as the T. B. league, Sanitarium. Orphanage. Cancer Fund, Milk For Britain. Greek Relief. Y. M. C. A., Ambul- ance Fund etc.

Time moves on. We now live

in a post-war world. The glor- ious past, the fruitful present must project themselves into tho chal- lenging future. “New occasions teach new duties." Our problems and opportunities assume new shapes. Our activities must pursue new channels. During the past year. our members believing that the old day school had served its day and generation too u for- ward step and in oo-operatlon with the rate-payers, in having it re-modeled and when completed 1t will be one of the finest public schools of the province. The needy and less fortunate have always re- ceived our support. The sick, shut- ms and the bereaved are‘ remem- bered and many of us may recall that kind or friendly act or deed which brought comfort in our time of need. Truly, our Institute is as one large family- sharing each others burdens with a few minor dif- ferenees at times. of course, but always one in the bigger and better things of life. Our Institute has sponsored and directed many plays and concerts from which we derived most of our funds, Int- teries or dancing were never used in our work. We have raised three thousand and twenty-six dollars and fifty cents 153,020.50) in the twenty years. and of this amount most of it has been expended. in concluding my report, may I pass along these few original lines:-

To organize an Institute, that

would be our pride and joy.

Yes. twenty years have come anrl gone, with mnny changes in between.

But. with a firm faith in Institute work, we've met our struggle unforseen. _

Some of our old have gone. but young have come. for God. has ivilled it so.

And so to all clear members gath- ered here. 'tis clear

We must work and never shirk, to keep our Institute dear.

And so our Institute must do its bit, throughout the coming years.

For time will ooms and time will go. but like the running river,

If we all keep faith, we will go on
