The Council of the Dominion Rifle Associa- | tion met to prepare for the annual meeting of | the Association. The chief questions to be} discussed are the following: tiegarding the | change of the place fer holding the annual | matches; an addition to the number of the} Executive Committee, anda question regard- | ing the disqualification of the whole Ontario coutingent of the Wimbledon team, owing to| some irregularity in their practice, which took | ace in Toronto instead of Oshawa.

THE TORONTO POSTMASTERSHIP. The reply given by the Postmaster General +

to the question relating to the salary of the Toronto Postmaster was a disappointing one to the Opposition. It had been announced in some of the leading organs that the salary of the new Postmaster would be $4,000, an ex- cess of $500 over that of Mr. Leslie. The statement. was made in ignorance, as was shown when Mr. Langevin announced that Mr. Patterson’s salary would be $3,000 per annum, or $500 less than Mr. Leslie had re- ceived, RETURNS OF EXPORTS AND IMPORTs.

The returns of exports and imports for the six months ending Jan. Ist, 1579, brought down for the guidance of Mr. Cartwright, show results as follows: Goods the produce of Canada, $37,397,776. Total, including coin and bullion, and goods not the produce of Canada, $46,379,116. Imports, total $46,- 242.29; duty $6,317,017. ‘The returns, show- ing receipts ‘and expenditures for the seven months ending Ist February, show as follows : Receipts, total consolidated fund, $12,416,- 608.91. Expenditure, total consolidated fund, $13,750,206,04. Deficit, $1,303,589.15. The returns for the first twenty days of February, showing receipts generally for that period, re- sult as follows: Customs. $1,518,201.57. Excise, $840,796.86. Other recetpts on con- solidated fund, making a total of $2,650,053.61, and on loan accounts receipts brought up in addition to, and including above, makes a total of $8,552,253. 80.

VICE-REGAL VISIT.

It is generally understood that His Mxcel- lency and the Princess Louise will visit the Maritime Provinces during the coming su™- mer. Reference was made to the subject in the Speech of the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick on ‘Thursday last, and the Governor General in his recent interview with Maritime members has given assurance to the same effect. It is thought by the well-informed here that her Royal Highness is disp sed to spend a considerable portion of the coming summer in Halifax, where there are many in- teresting associations in connexion with the residence of the Duke of Kent in this country. There is no doubt that during the Vice-Regal tour, His Excellency and the Princess will visit all the leading places in the Maritime Prov- inces.

Senator Howlan, of P. EK. Island, is suifer- ing very severely with his eyes, and it is stated that there ave. strong probabilities of him losing his eyesight altogether.

Our despatches from Ottawa this morning, announce that the returns brought down in respouse to Mr. Cartwright’s request, show a detieit for the first seven months of the current fiscal year of $1,303,589! This will make Mr. Cartwright’s deficits to date as follows :—

A CANARD. The Ottawa Free Press, which has been an or- gan of the Letellier party, says, this evening, that a meeting of Liberals was held in Mon. treal on. Friday evening, attended by the most influential men of the Party, at which it was decided to deputize Senator Thibaudeau and Hon. Mr. Laurier to visit Quebec to in- duce Governor Loetellier to anticipate the ad- verse vote of the Commons by resigning. The Free Press is earning an unenviable notoriety for inaceuracy of statement, and there is good reason for believing that there is not a word of truth in ‘this reference to the Letellier matter. THE LOBSTER TRADE.

A large deputation of Maritime Province members waited on the Hon. Mr, Pope, Min- ister of Marine and Fisheries, to-day, to urge the importance of measures for protecting the lobster trade. 1t was reported that, owing to the present system of ‘‘close time,” large quantities-ef you lobsters were killed an- nually, thereby adding much to the danger of this fishery being c. upletely exhausted, The Minister said he fully recoguized the import- ance of the interest and promised to give the matter his immediate attention.

THE MOUNTED POLICE,

The bill introduced by Sir Jchn McDonald contains some provisions of importance. The bill isto amend and consolidate, as amended, the several Acts and parts of Acts relating to the North-West Mounted Police. The Act provides fora free grant, not exceeding 160 acres, to all members of the force who shall have served tive years cont auously, and shall be certified by the Commissic..cr of Police, It also provides for the internal government and discipline of the force. The Saperannuation Act is to be applied to the Commissioners of Police under this Act. ‘The Act is also made to apply to the district of Keewatin, and the force shall be under the control of the Ad- ministration of that district.

THE TORONTO Po STMASTERSHIP.

Mr. Hay’s motion for a return respecting the superannuation of Lesslie, late Postmaster 2t Toronto, led toashort and rather acrimo- nious debate in to-day’s session of the House. Ever since the superannuation was made, the Grit Party and press have indulged in all sorts of wild accusations against the Govern- ment. In the first place, it was alleged that the salary had been increased, and the false- hood was persisted im until the Postmaster General elfectually disposed of it by announc- ing to the House that there had been a saving of $500 a year effected. ‘Then, again, ib was assumed that Lesslie had been forced to re- sign, and with this ides the leading spirits on the Opposition were fully primea for & discussion on Tory immorality generally, as exemplified in this particular — case, Mr. Huntington fairly boiled over with im dignation at the iniquitous transaction, but he cooled down when taken in hand by the Minister of Public Works. He was not. con- tent when Hon. Mr. Langevin cxplained that Lesslie had been superannuated at sis oOwm desire. \Vhen Hon. Dr, Tupper drew the ai- teation of the House to some superannuaticns made by the late Postmaster General, and pointed out the gross injustice which was done, and asked that a committee should be aj- pointed to investigate all superannuation, the hon. member for Shefford. had good reason to fear that he would be hoist with his own pe» ‘ard. Quite a number of cases were specially referred to, showing the absurdity of Grit carping on the subject of appointment.
