Neither the Liberal Party nor the Conservative Party is in a position to promise a causeway. The most that either Party can do is to support the project, as both have

possible time. :

__ It is but fairsto add that the causeway scheme _ was proposed by the Liberals in the first place—by ‘Mr. Neil Matheson as Liberal mem- ber for Queens in.the House of Com- ‘mons and by Preniier Matheson in the Legislature. This newspaper sup- ported them from the start in the face of considerable scepticism, - not to say opposition from at least one Liberal colleague of Mr. Matheson at Ottawa. But all that is past history- now. There is practically unanimous support for the ‘project, not only in this Province but in the Maritimes generally. There is also a general feel- ing that it is too important to be ex- ploited by either side for partisan purposes. Let us keep it that way.

A Strange Omission

The communique issued at the. end of the Canada-United States trade talks says that the two coun- tries agreed that the financial moves recently made by Britain and other European countries “removed the fin- _ancial justification for discrimina- tion against dollar suppliers”: and called for “further overseas moves to quicken dismantling European im- port curbs against goods from Can- ada and the United States.” The statement added that “the United ree and Canadian Governments will be watching with. sympathetic interest the way in which the logic of the new situation is translated

-~into action.”

There is nothing in the partial convertibility of European curren- cies to: warrant the expectation of. “dismantling European import curbs” against American ‘and Canadian goods. That may -happen gradually, aver a period of time; but it is not something that necessarily follows from partial convertibility or from the workings of the Common Mar- ket. Britain and the European coun- tries still have thei. domestic indus- tries to protect; and they still must handle carefully their gold and dollar reserves. Indeed, the chief aim of the ‘Common Market, which is already j effect in six countries, and the f trade area proposed by Britain axd a number of other countries, is the strengthening of the European trad Ing area, 50 that it might become less, dependent on overseas trade.

fit from the financial and economic moves undertaken in Britain and West Europe, That is by easing bar- riers to trade on this ‘side of the At- lantic. It is chimerical to’ expect the European countries to dismantle thei: import curbs so long as Canada and

than 100 rich tapestries, are sti! in the Province of Quebec; and Pre- mier Duplesis has said he will never make “any deal, agreement or com- promise with the contemptible Gov- ernment of Poland for their ret@rn.” It is extremely doubtful that Mr. Duplesis has any legal right to take that stand. Perhaps the Federal Gov- ernment will be able to persuade him to let the treasures in Quebec’s keep ing go with the others: It is unfor- tunate, of course, that a Communist Government is in control in Poland But nothing that Mr. Duplesis can say or do will alter that situation; and, after all, the treasures are the pro- perty of the Polish people, not of the Polish Communist Party.

Faces may not be true gaubes of character. But I suspect that there aye some things to be read from them. The message I pick up from Presley and Bardot is that these are the faces of young people.who are pampered. self- centered and excessively pleased ed with themselves. They are the faces of large, inert children, lacking in purpose or curiosily about the world.

The sight of such faces, clow- ering from screens and maga- zine covers, sends blood racing through your veins. Millions of adolescents want to love Bardot or Presley, or be like them. Do those faces truly reflect whai is in the teen aged heart?

If so, we might as well drop our defenses and invite the Rus- sians to take over now.
