Inquest Held Last Night At Georgetown

A coroner's jury at Georgetown last night decided that Patrick Cosg-rove, formerly oi Fredericton, P. E. L. and more recently a resi- dent of Charlottetown. came to his death from a cerebral hem- orrhage. The jury decided, after medical evidence had been sub-i mitted. that the man was dead when he struck the water. afterl falling over the Railway Wharfl at Georgetown on October 8. Thel death occurred at approximately '1 DJ!!-

Tho jury recommended atrongly that a railing be erected on the cast side of the Railway Wharf. from the head of the wharf to a point 50 feet from the south and of the potato shed.

Coroner Dr. George Inman of Montague presided last night. o Mr. 5. s. Hessian, K.O.. of Mon- tague represented the Grown. The hearing was held in the Court House.

The first witness, A. B. Cut» cliife, Charlottetown undertaker, said he had known the deceased 35 years. Mr. Cosgrove was re- ceiving a pension from the United States Governmant- for services in the First Great War. He made arrangements with Mr. Cut- cllffo for burial in Hope River in tho event of death.

Mr. Cutclifle submitted a letter from Dr. J. D. MacGuigan, Char- lottetown, which was entered in evidence. Tho letter said that Dr. MacGulgan had been treating Mr. Cosgrove since 1945 for high blood pressure and heart disease.

The inquest was held at the MacLean Funeral Home.

The accident took place Sunday near Mrs. Court's home.

Dr. F. W. Tldmarsh, City, stated that he examined the deceased on Sunday afternoon. and found her conscious but completely paralyzed, except for a slight movement oi the right arm, and suffering from gross injuries in the central ner- vous system. He suggested thai/ her death on Monday was duo to fracture of the cerebrum and lacerations of the spinal cord.

Mr. Patrick Flynn, Bedford, said that he saw Mrs. Court, accom- panied by her small son, walking down the left hand side 0i the road towards her home. and saw a car some distance along the road, lravem"! in the same direction. He also stated that he had turn- ed into the gate towards his own home, and. did not see anything further until after the accident occurred. Then he saw the car ,just in off the pavement on the light hand side. and the deceas/zi lying about seven‘ yards behind the car. He immediately went to notify Mr. Court._who called an ambulance.

Mrs. Patrick Flynn, Bedfol-d, stated that she was standing at the aide oi the road talking to Mrs. Court, and that the latter decided to go homewund was look- ing around for her dog, and ses- lng him on the road, said “there 1b my dog now“ and ran out on the road right in front of an on- coming car, which struck her, rolling hcr off to the side of the road. Mrs. Flynn further“ stated that the deceased was aware of the oncoming car, which ahe add- ed. was only going slowly.

Mrs. Stella Hcnnessey, City, stated that she was riding in the front seat oi’ the car with her son Louis, who was driving, and her sister, Mrs. Ann Mac-Donald. She saw a man, two women and a little hoy on a tricycle on the left side of the road, and said that the car was travelling about 20 or 25 miles an hour. when a little black dog. appearing from the right side of the road. ran in front of the car. She said her son turned the car slightly to the left to avoid the dog. Then she saw a

.woman run in front oi the car, so he turned the car towards the right hand ditch, in an attempt to avolrl hitting her.

Mrs. Ann MacDonald, City, in her testimony. which was similar to that of Mrs. Hennessey, said that after the accident, she found the deceased a short distance be- hind the cal", and attempted to give aid to the injured woman,

Constable Watt, R.C.M.P., said that he received a call about 3 p.m. informing him of the acci- dent. On arriving at the scene he found the car in a shallow, fiat ditch about two feet deep, on the right side of the road. He did not see the body, as it had already been removed. He said that the car travelled about 40 feet along the ditch after leaving the pave- ment. He checked the brakes and steering equipment end found them in good working order. He found the grill on the front of the car was slightly bent.
