Dramatic.—The Lyceum Comedy Co. are making great preparations for their entertain- ment in the Lycenm on Easter Menday Night, when they will put on the boards the great military drama “ British Born,” in full caat. There are over thirty characters in the piece, including soldiers. The Club have lately added to their membership, and, judg- ing from the rehearsals, we feel safe in saying that *‘ British Born” on next Monday night, promises to be one of the best dramatic enter-

Masonre Soctat.—On Thursday evening last, the members of St. John’s and Victoria Lodges, with their lady friends and guests, passed a very enjoyable time in Masonic Hall. The Worshipful Grand Master, Hon. John Yeo, and officers of Grand Lodge, were received with Masonic honors on their arrival. P. D. G. M., J. W. Morrison, occupied the chair, and opened the evening's entertainment by calling upon the brethern to sing ‘* We meet upon the level,” which was followed by speeches, singing, recitations, etc., until the time of intermission, when the tables were spread and the ladies and gentlemen present regaled with a very good repast. Then followed the toasts usually given on such occasions, which were heartily drank in hot coffee and responded to in well chosen and happy remarks.

Spreirs.—One evening this week, while a family living in the eastern end of the town were sitting around the tea table, they were surprised to hear notes of melody proceeding from the piano in the drawing room, from which they had just withdrawn, Conversa- tion was immediately arrested and questioning glances exchanged. ‘‘ Spirits,” suggested one, more like, said another, ‘‘some gentry from the bog.” Meanwhile it became apparent that skillfal fingers were manipulating the keys. Bertty, March 30. At Posen the military been open das a refuge for

barracks have persons made homeless by the floods at Cologne. Several quexys are submerged and those who inhabit houses near the banks of the Rhine are leaving them.

A heavy thunder and rain storm raged for several hours last night, and reports of further damage in consequence are coming in. The gas works at Posen were destroy- ed, and the city is in darkness. The Rhine continues to rise and people are deserting their homes. The number of absolutely homeless people in the inundated districts is placed at 70,000. At Elbing the water is two feet higher than during the great tlox 08 of 1876.

M. Loguerre proceeds to-morrow for the Department of Nord, where he will com- mence an electoral campaign in favor of General Boulanger. The General himself will explain his programme, at a banquet at Lille, the capital of the Department.

Escaped by a Technicality.

Orrawa, March 30.

The Supreme Court to-day rendered judgment in the Glengarry election case allowing, with costs, the appeal of Mr. Pat Purcell against the judgment unseating him for corruption,—deciding that the trial for unseating him should have been commenced within six months after filing of the peti- tion and that only application for an extension of the time for hearing the merits should have been made within six months. Justice Gwynne dissented.

NEW ZEALAND. Great Storm--Roads Destroyed.

Lonvon, March 30.

A fierce storm, with high tides and tidal wave, which caused great damage in the north and south islands of New Zealand, have occurred. Telegraph wires have been prostrated, and railroad traffic has been abandoned on account of the destruction of the roads.

Baptist Convention.

Toronto, March 30.

The Convention at which delegates were present from the Baptist Church through- out the Dominion, concluded its sittings at Guelph at an early hour this morning. Two important questions were discussed: Ist, Whether McMaster’s University; should enter the University Confederation scheme, and 2nd, Whether the Arts Department should be located in Toronto or Woodstock. It was decided that McMaster’s University should be organized and developed as a permanent independent Christian school of learning ; and that the Arts Department should be located in Toronto.

A Charge Met by a Challenge.

Toronto, March 30.

tev. Dr. Fulton, of Brooklyn, N. Y., who has been lecturing here the past few days, attacked the Romish convents, charging the priests with immorality, and that the nuns were kept ina condition of slavery. Archbishop Lynch has addressed a letter to the Mayor, inviting him and a deputation of four Aldermen to visit the convents and interrogate the nuns as they pleased. It is understood that Mayor Clark to-morrow will reply to Archbishop Lynch’s invitation, declining to do so,

Defaulters Captured.

Toronto, March 30.

Chales E. Cross, President, and Samuel C. White, Cashier, of the National Bank of Raleigh, North Carolina, who absconded two days ago, were arrested here to-night. Over $2,500 were found in their possession.

Punished.

Montreat, March 30. John Fahey, the convicted detective, was sentenced to fourteen years imprisonment in St. Vincent de Paul penitentiary, his counsel's application for appeal being refused.

Easter Market.

Tue market to-day was well atten led and stocked, and sales were lively at Easter prices. Down stairs it was difficult to move about during the forenoon. The dis- play'of Easter beef was, of course, the great attraction, the different stalls being well stocked.

Messrs. Blake Bros.’ department was, as usual, the centre of attraction. Their display consisted of four carcasses of beef, which dressed 4105 Ibs., a remarkably good carcass of veal and some prime mutton Of the animals killed the white steer dressed 1185 I|bs.; the red __ steer 1170 lbs. ; the Stock Farm _ heifer 1100; the Doyle heifer 650 lbs. Experts pronounce their display to be the best they ever had.

Saunders & Newsom also had a splendid display,consisting of three carcasses uf beef, the total weight of which was 2592 Ibs., as well as some very nice mutton, hams and bacon. The McRae heifer tipped the scales at 916 lbs., the McKinlay steer at 916 lbs., and the McKinlay heifer at 760 lbs.

Henry McGregor, Lot 48, made another fine showing. His two carcasses of beef ranked with the best in the market. The Mutch heifer weighed 898 lbs., and the Mason ox 867 lbs.

John Drake was also to the front with the carcass of the Brow ox, and the Wright heifer, the total weight of which was 1400 lbs. Both dressed well.

George Thorne had two carcasses of beef and one carcass of mutton. The beef con- sisted of the carcasses of the Bagnall and Drake heifers, which weighed 597 and 570 ibs. respectively—the mutton weighed 90 Ibs. Both beef and mutton were guod.

Barrett Henderson’s display consisted of three very nice carcasses of beef, the total weight of which was 2030 lbs. The White steer weighed 680 Ibs., and the Younker cow and. heifer 700 and 650 lbs. respectively.

The stalls of Henry Wood, Patrick Corish, Philip Curley, Patrick Trainor, the Messrs. Brown and cthers were well stocked with a prime article. The best cuts sold at from 12 to 14 cents per |b.

Up stairs there was a very good supply of eggs, fowls, and the other articles usual- ly on sale there. Eggs sold at from 10 to 11 cents per dozen, and the other prices were unchanged.

A Critic Criticised.

Sir,—In your issue of Wednesday there appeared a criticism on the report of the Prince of Walrs College entertainment. This bold youth has taken into his hands the difficult task of finding an error in said report. He has conceived the idea that **had went” could not be properly used, but we want to tell this criticising youth that if he had studied ‘‘ Mason’s Gram- mar” alittle more, he would not have taken upon his shoulders this difficult task. Mason says that ‘‘ went” was formerly a participle, and shows where it was used by Chaucer ; and we have not seen where any bill was introduced by the House of Assem- bly to abolish it. If ‘‘A BC” would spend some of the time in learning gram- mar that he spends in fault-finding some of our Parliament speakers, he would not have such an amount of ignorance to ex- hibit to.the public. Hoping that this critic will come forward and humbly apologize.
