MINIATURE CycLone. —A miniature cyclone on Kent Street, in the neighborhood of the City Building, attracted some attention about noon to-day. For a short time the dust was blown around in a circle ata lively rate, at times attaining a height of six or eight feet.

RAILWAY MEN’s CHRISTIAN CONVENTION.-- We understand the fifth annual Railway Men’s Christian Convention for the Maritime Provinces will be held at Trure. N S., begin ning Friday evening, August 22nd. The loca- tion is favorable for a good representative gathering of railway men. Evangelist Meikle has been invited.

A UonstmpTive’s SAD Dearu.—A Halifax despatch says: A young man named William Barrett was found dead in a barn near his house at Beaver Bank, a few miles from here. In his hand he held a paper on which was written a number of requests as to his burial, etc. He was a sufferer from consumption, and having walked to the barn, he took a weak turn, which ended in his death. As no one was near, he wrote the note referred to.
AccipeNT.—An apprentice in the establish- ment of Mark Wright & Co,, named McAleer, had two of his fingers injured with a circular saw this morning. One of the fingers was so badly injured that it had to be amputated, which operation was performed by Dr. Beer it the P. E. Island Hospital. McAleer had been with Mark Wright & Co. only about three weeks, and had no business whatever near the saw. But the lad thought he could run the machine, and succeeded in—cutting himself.

[.0. O. F. Graxp Loper.—Owing to the large number of visitors expected here on the 13th inst., to attend the annual session of the Grand Lodge, L O. O. F. of the maritime provinces, the proposed banquet has been abandoned and a general reception will be held in Jack’s Hall. The Lodge at Amherst will run an excursion to this city on the 12th inst., accompanied by the Amherst band.—St. Jonn Sun, 6th.
A portion of the delegates from this city leave on Monday next, the balance on the fol- lowing morning.

Tue Tuomas Net Lock.—The Moncton Times says: The nut lock invented by Mr. Charles Thomas, of Moncton, is now in the equity court. Mr. Thomas has been served with an injunction at the suit of R. A. Borden and M. Lodge, to restrain him from further patenting the invention without their concur- rence and a decree is being sought to cancel ny patent in foreign countries that Mr. Thomas is now applying for, and that he may be perpetually restrained from proceeding with the invention which he has made. An application will be made to dissolve the in- junction at once.

Convicts Revolt. Boston, Mass., Aug. 7.
About three o'clock this afternoon the convicts in the harness shop of the Charles- town State Prison refused to obey the orders ul the keepers’ and began throwing missiles in every direction. ‘They made a dash for the guard and tried to scale the walls, but the sentinels fired on them. An alarm was sent out to the city police, and = in less than five minutes forty-tive oflicers arrived and shortly afterwards 150 more appeared. In fifteen minutes from the beginning of the uprising the meg were safely under lock and key. One convict was considerabiy bruised about the head by an officer’s club. None of the convicts escaped.

Loss of the Isabel. (QuEBEC, Aug. 7.
Tenders have been called by the owners of the barque Isabel to raise the vessel and cargo on salvage. It is now said that the total loss by the accident will not exceed $20,000. ‘The Isabel was partially insured, and there was insurance ot $18,000 in the Atlantic Mutual of New York on the ca: go, Tre Isabel was a wooden vessel of 360 tons, built at Prince Edward Island in 1880,

Letters from Alberta say the example of the Mormons is having a bad effect upon the Indiaus. The Mormon village or set- tlement is situated adjacent to the Black Indian Reserve, and the Indians already call them ‘‘men of many wives,” and claim that the Mormons have been telling them how good a thing it is to have more than one wife.
0’Connell's Birthday.
Toronto, Aug. 7. The Roman Catholics of this city cele- brated O’Connell’s birthday yesterday with a procession and a picnic, and a serious row occurred between the Orange Young Britons who paraded the streets, and the police. Several of the latter were badly injured.

Hauirax, Aug. 7. Prince George of Wales is to return to England in May next, when he will give up the command of the Thrush on his promo- tion to the rank of commander, and shortly afterwards it is probable he will be appoint- ed to one of the royal yachts.
