Tae Wreckep Assave.—A Yarmouth despatch in an American paper says: * Nearly one half of the cargo of the Elder~Dempster line steamsuip Assave, Liverpool to St. John, which was wrecked on Blonde Rock Apri) 5th, has been saved in @ damaged condition. Kighteen hundred cases of oranges and a larg? amount of dry goods have been landed here, but mach of the cargo was apprepriated by hundreds of fishermen from Seal Island and vicinity. Jn truth the manuscript that is Coming is nota Jog although it has received that nickname. lt ie an account of the voyage of the Mayflower, and a history of the Plymouth colony from 1602 to 1646, written by Governor William Bradford, and banded down in his family through at least four generations. Massa- chusetts was orginally a part of the Diocese of London, and this manuscript with others, fonnd its way to the library of the See of Lendon, where it was discovered in [846. It contains a registry of births, marriages, and deaths of Pilgrims, and records about their property. At tbe desire of the gov- ernment of Massachusetts, the American Antiqnarian Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Pilgrim Society of Plymouth, andthe New England Society of New York the President, torongh the Ambaseador, asked that it be given to the United States. The Archbishop of Canter bury and the Bishop of London backed the amdassador’s request, and on March 25 a Consistory Court of the Diocese of Londow determined to gratify the Presi- dent’s wish, and to hand over the’ log to Mr. Bayard whenever he was ready to re~ ceive it. The only conditions of the trans- fer that a pLotographic, certified copy of the book shal! be left with the present custodians of it, and that the original shall be put in a safe place where persons con- cerned can have access to it.—Harper’s

A discount at the rate of Two and One- half Per Cent shal] be allowed to all taxpayers who shall, on or before the Fifteenth uay of July next, A D 1897, pay to the City Clerk, at his office, the taxes severally due by them for the current year on Real Estate and Personal Property for civic purposes,

The rate of assessment on Real Estate for general Civic purposes under said Statute, for the year commencing the first day of Jan- uary, A 1 1897, and ending the thirty-first day of December, A D 1897, is hereby specitied and fixed at the rate of one per cent on every dol- lar of the value of Real Estate, as assessed by the Assessors of the said City of Charlotte- town in the General Assessment Book and Valuation Roll of all Reai Estate and Person- al Property liable to taxation in said City, and of all persons liable to pay Poll Tax therein, made and duly returned by them on the fourth day of March, A D 1397

2nd. Ist, Therate of Assessment on Real Estate fora Waterworks Fund under said Statute for the year commencing the first day of Jan- uary, A D 1897, and ending the thirty-first day of December, A. D., 1897, is hereby specified and fixed at the rateof one-eighth of one per cent on every dollar of the value of Real Es- tate as assessed by the Assessors of the said City of Charlottetown in the general Assess- ment Book and Valuation Roll of all Real Es- tate and Persona! Property liable to taxation in said City, and all persons liable to pay Poll Tax therein made and duly returned by them on the fourth day of March, A. D, 189°.

2nd. The rate of Assessment on Personal Property for such Water Works Fund for the year commencing the first day of January A D 1897, and ending the thirty-first day of December, A. D., 1897, is hereby specified and fixed at tre rate of one-eighth of one per cent onevery dollar of the value of Personal Proper- ty as assessed by the Assessors of the said City in the said Generali Assessment Book and Va- luation Roli, made and duly returned by them as aforesaid.

8rd. The amount of Poll Tax te be paid by every person returned by the said Assessors in said General Assessment Book and Valu- ation Roll as liable thereto for such Water works Fund under said Statute, for the year commencing the first day ot January, A. D. 1897. and ending the 3lst day of December,A D 1897, is hereby specified and fixed at the sum of Ten Cents (10c) onthe poll of every person so assessed and returned as aforesaid.
