A youne man named Guthro, the ouly sup- port of his parents, was drowned at Tracadie, N. B., on the 4th July, by the upsetting of a boat. On the 5th inst., at the same place, Watson UOlarke had both legs broken while entangled in « rope on the wood boat. Auiumn Belle.

One of the great difficulties of the location ef the new Penitentiary at Dorchester, is the absence of water. So far, although pretty extensive boring operations have been carregl on, no Water snfficent to supply an_ institu- tion so extensive as this one, has yet been reached.

A poy named Michael Duffy was arrested for setting of numerous fire crackers in the streets last evening. The Magistrate lectured and afterwards dismissed him. W. Wise, ar rested for being drunk and incapable was fined $1.00 ani costs or 4 days.

Rricewarp Hunt and Archibald McMillan, Esqs., left here on Tuesday on a tishing ex- cursion. They will be away about a month, and purpose taking in most of the trout streams west. The first consignment—the result of one evening's tishing—reached here on yesterday's train, consisting of about four dozen fine sea trout. We wish them luck.— i Journal,

Tue Methedist Brick Church, on Prince street, was literally crowded last evening on the occasion of the marriage of the Rev. M. R. Knight to Miss Louise W. Beer, daughter of Councillor Beer, of this city. The bridal party wasa very pretty and tasteful one. Rev. H. P. Cowperthwaite, assisted by the Rev’ds YT. Smallwood and T. J, Deinstadt, performed the ceremony by which the happy pair were made one for life. Most heartily do we join io the congratulations of their friends and wish thema useful and happy career. The bridegroom—who was but re- cently ordainei—is, we understand, stationed at Gibson, N. 8., and thither he will repair with his bride.

Mr. W. F. Brurrovens, with the drama- tic company now playing at the Academy of Music (Halifax), intends visiting Charlotte- town, P. &. [., where a short season will be inaugurated. We congratulate our friends in the island on the opportunity that will then be afforded them of witnessing the perform- ance of such playsas the ‘‘Lady of Lyons,” *‘The Ticket ot Leave Man,” and other pieces of equal prominence in dramatic literature, by a dramatic company of sterling merit—equal to any similar organization that may be met with im leading theatres in America. The dramatic world of Charlottetown may rely on a series of theatrical representations of a high order.— Hx. Reporter.

THe Journa! says :—A_ serious accident, which almost terminated fatally, occurred at Little Channel, Lot 11, on Friday, the 27th alt. In conseyuence of their having been a a heavy swell in the Gulf an ugly line of breakers extended all along the bar outside the entrance to theharbor. One of the fish- ing boats in attempting to cross this got up- set, and the occupants—a Mr. Morrison and his two sons and Mr. Carr (an old man)—were nearly drowned before they were taken off. Some of the men who saw the accident rend- ered prompt assistance. The rescuers were Mr. James Palmer, Mr. William Hardy, Ed. Kinsman, and G. McArthur. It is said if they had been in the water many minutes longer they must have perished. ‘They were taken to the lighthouse and Mr. Hardy, the keeper, and his wife, rendered every assist- ance in their power to have them restored. Had there been even no house to take them to when they were taken ashore, the lives of some would scarcely have been saved. A life boat, buoys, and bedding, should, as at other lighthouses, be kept here for such cases of emergency.

JEFFERSON G:ARDINER, of North River, ap- peared before ‘Theoph. DesBrisay, Esq., J. P., to-day, at the instance of Charles White, car- penter. White charged that, on Tuesday evening last, (‘ardiner met him at Mr. Wood- side's, and there called him all description of names, including thief, liar, etc.; and stated that he (White) stole a leg of pork, and then assaulted him withastone. Gardiner denied the charge preferred against him; buta witness was called who fully substantiated what had been stated by White. Gardiner’s witnesses were not up to time, and he asked for an adjournment of the ease that he might be able to bring them forward. An hour's adjourn- ment was granted. During the adjournment Gardiner issued a summons against White for that he, on Monday last assaulted Gardiner at North River: and by the firing of stones drove him into the channel of the river, thereby greatly endangering his ((tardiner’s) life. White, seeing that Gardiner was bound to prosecute, suggested a compromise, which was duly etleeted. When the Magistrate re-| samed his seat the first case was Withdrawn by consent of White, as was also the second by consent of liardiner,
