To ive his decision far in advance that e is not a car.- didate would automatically cost him much of h's influence in h.s own party, which would plunge right into the task of finding his successor.

For Mr. Roosevelt to state a long way ahead that he is a candidate would make him a tirlzet long be- fore lt was necessary, of all those who oppo e his candidacy. It would start months of angrv debate on the ‘third term precedent" which keipt other distinguished Americans from to serve more than e ght years n the White House.
