‘Dean MacMillan Rhonda McLellan

My name is Dean MacMillian. I am run- ning for the position of Stu- dent Union president here at UPEI. I have two years of council experience and have been on over ten council sub- committees, chairing two of these. I have held the po- sition of Freshmen represen- tative and am currently an Arts representative on this years council.

I started my studies. at UPEI three years ago and from then have been actively involved with keen interest in Student Union activities. For the past two years I have seen how the Student Union operates from a first hand view. I have seen many prob- lems arise, with various so- lutions, some working, some failing. I have kept note of the ideas I have come up with

I believe that as pres- ident I could make a defi- nite difference in our Student — Union. As the official spokesman of the Student Union, I will make it my perogative to ensure that at the end of my term all Islanders know what the Student union is I will also do my utmost to make sure that provincial and fed- eral governments hear us, the students, loud and clear.

Here on campus, spirit will be my foremost task. I have many ideas to make spirit in 1988-89 the best ever. This along with my other plans to upgrade the services that the Student Union offers you, will hope- fully make for the best year ever for the UPEISU.

Over the next few days I will be advertising my plat- form. Please feel free to ask me about any of the pro- grams I would like to imple- ment. It is essential that I speak with everyone over the next year to hear your ideas and opinions. Thank you very much for your sup- port. Lets look forward to a great year.

The position of president of the Student Union is a privilege as well as a re- sponsibility. It includes du- ties such as representing the

student body to the univer- sity, the community, and the country. This is a duty which I feel is one fo the most im- portant ones,

The validity of this rep- resentation depends on open communication between the president, the student coun- cil, and the students. The president must express a willingness to listen to your ideas and concerns. It is up to you to elect him/her for this reason.

I am confident in my abilities and innovative ideas to represent you honestly, and, by doing so, overcome apathy and give the UPEI

student body a new “spirit”.

On March 15, I look forward to expressing these ideas and issues which are important to know before you can ‘vote for the right candidate. Once you have decided which one serves your needs and _ interests best, you can exercise your voting right on the 16th and 17th of March. Lisa Murphy — VP Academic

Hello!

My name is Lisa Mur- phy and I would like to of- fer my candidacy for the Vice President Academic position of 1988/89. I am a 2nd year Arts student majoring in Canadian Studies and Po- litical Studies. I would like to outline some of the VPA’s duties and then let you know why I think I should be con- sidered for this elected po- sition on the UPEI Student Union Executive.

Among various executive member duties, the VP Aca- demic is responsible for all academic issues of students of the Union. This includes academic matters and con- cerns of the student sub- organizations on campus and all research activities under- taken by the Union on be- half of students. The VP Academic oversees the oper- ation of both the yearbook and the student newspaper, The Gem. The VP Aca- demic, as a member on Sen-

I am firmly committed to serving the needs of stu- dents during their educa- tional years at UPEI. The quality of education and the accessibility to it has been a very strong interest of mine and one that I have strived to achieve since my entry to UPEI. A recent example of my committment to the cause of quality education was my involvement in the “National Week of Action”. As an organizer, with a hard working committee and with student involvement,- I am proud to say we achieved some much needed awareness from our levels of govern- ment, our community, and our UPEI campus.
