The Concert Last Evening.

¥. M.C. A, Hatt was fairly filled last evening, and the Concert was a real enjoy- went. Mr. Vinnicombe’s violin playing was, as usual, very good indeed. Mr, Fletcher got @ fine mellow tone from his cornet; and, alto. —_ he did very well. The piano “Duet”

y Mrs. McRae and Mrs. Halderston was en. cored. It was welldone. Miss Stronach’s piano solo was fairly well rendered. The choruses, especially the first, were exceedingly well given. There was great strength in the several parts, and they were all well sus. tained. Certainly there was on the platform material for first rate work. The quartette ** Village Bells” pleased us much; for though the music was simple, the parts were so well balanced that the etfect was very nice. The solos by Misses Robertson and Parker were exceedingly good. Messrs. Beer, Cunning- ham, Caldwell! and Fletcher --who sang solus also acquitted themselves well. Mr. Beer was in capital voice. The humorous readings ef Mr. F.S. Longworth and Miss Barr gave much satisfaction.

The performance, generally, was good. We confess that we should like to have the com- positions of great musicians levied upon at public concerts to a greater extent than is the custom here. The music last night was of a very by sae A character; but those who took part did what they undertook so well that everyone present seemed to be very much

Macdonald delivered his popular lecture on **How to Read and What to Read,” in the Temperance Hall, Mortague, to an intelligent and attentive audience. Suventy-rive bags of mail matter arrived at Cape Traverse from Cape Tormentine at 2.30 this p. m., and at3 o'clock sixty-four bags arrived at Cape Tormentine from Cape Tra- verse. In reply to Mr. Yeo, Sir John said that | no portion of the fishery award had been | set apart for the use of Prince Edward’ Island or any other Province.

In reply to Mr. Mongenais, Hon. J. C. Pope said it was not the intention of the Government to repeal the Act forbidding the throwing of saw-dust and rubbish into navigable streams.

Mr. Domville broke his arm yesterday at Montreal, by falling on it while running to eatch the train. It was broken in the same place as recently fractured. He had the wound attended to, and was carried here to-daye He is doing well and expects to be out again soon. Very great regret is ex- pressed by all at his misfortune.

It is rumored, on pretty good authority, | that it is the intention of the Government to move for the adjournment of the House immediately after the delivery of the! Budget speech.

This could be done so as to give mem- bers the fullest opportunity to understand the proposed changes in the tariff previous to entering upon the general discussion of the question. .

The woollen manufacturers who inter- viewed Hon. Mr. Tilley, represented that they desired an ad valorem duty, additional, of two'and a half per cent., and also specific duty and 10 per cent. per pound.

This change, they declare, will completely prevent the importation of the much abused English shoddy tweeds.

The Ottawa Herald again demands fur- ther Irish Catholic representation in the Cabinet, and states that Mr. J. Costigan, M. P., and Dr. Bergen, M. P., very ma- terially assisted in the election of Mr. John White, for East Hastings.

Although the Commons voted the credit asked for, considerable opposition is mani- fested to the Government policy against the Zulus especially, by Home Rulers.

He Kept his Word.

Mr. Joseph N. McDonald, of Richmond, Lot 14, is an unusually plucky individual, hav- ing walked all the way from his home in Lot 14, on Friday last, the day of the terrific snow storm, to keep an engagement to play the violin for a party, to be held that evening in| Reid’s Hall, Summerside. Under all the cir- * cumstances, we think, those who intended having the party would have absolved Mr. McDonald from neglect of duty had he not put ia an appearance on Friday night last. But Mr. McDonald is an ardent votary of Terpisi- chore, aud evidently believes in the Byronic i sjunection :

**On with the dance, let joy be unconfied.”

At last he neared the gaol, but he knew it not, for the stately spires of Summerside gleamed not as in other and brighter days, but were shrouded in the impenetrable drift. Following the track, nearer and nearer he comes, when hark! a dismal sound breaks in upon his ears. ’Tis the cry of fire! At half-past two in the after- noon, this undaunted young fellow arrived at the scene of the conflagration, and rendered a man’s service in helping to fight the fire fiend. Here is a noble lesson of devotion to duty. He promised the Summerside boys he wouid come, and he came. He kept his word. In sun- shine, drifts or rain, no man can do more. Mr. McDonald has three times crossed the Atlan- tic, buffeting its stormy surges, he has seen cyclones in the Gulf of Mexico, and navigated the turgid waters of the Mississippi, but never in the whole course of his eventful career has he seen such a day as Friday last.

Asatest of physical endurance we chal- lenge O'Leary, Campana, Weston or Madame Anderson, to beat this. McDonald’s walk was no holiday affair in a rink or theatre, but the stern reality of a fight against the most terrific elements of nature. —Jouraal.
