Mr. Tesson wrote it whiile in this city, and those who had the pieasure of his acquaintance will be interested in it from that fuet itself, while on perusing the work they will discover no small ‘power of exciting interest. in the details- of the -plot and especially in the deseriptions of the country, its climate, its inhrbitants and their everyday life. So realistic are these. descriptions that one can forth a Very clear conception of what the author describes, and they leave an impression as if these ; scenes had been actually seen by the read- er. ‘The scene of the romance is in Louis- iana, and the time a few years after the Civil War. The principal characters..are French planters and their families, . the. negroes formerly owned as slaves by them, and some native French. The criaia of the story is brought about by the strong, ‘eyer-
