The blazc which apparently started when a spark set fire to a stack of grain. destroy- ed the barn and its contents of 12 tons of hay and 600 bushels of grain. A horse and a milking machine both in the barn at the time of the fire were safely re- moved.

Red cross Truck Stolen But Later Recovered Yesterday

A truck belonging to the Red Cross was stolen yesterday after- noon from where it was parked temporarily in a central part of the city. It was later recovered at Mount Herbert after it had ap- parently been turned over and ab- andoned. The truck suffered con- siderable damage.

The City Police arrested two men in connection with the theft but one cscaped from custody by climbing up a rope to a ventilator window in the roof of the Police Station cell block. and over the roof to the street. .

Manslaughter - Case Postponed

The case arose out of the fatal truck-train collision at Wlnsloe crossing on June 7th last when Wendell Johnson of Brookfield was killed.

There will be several panel discussions on subjects of impor- tance to all parts of Canada. On the panels will be several local speakers as well as authorities from various sections of the Do- minion. The aubjects selected for the panels include. "Planning in General". "Metropolitan Plan- ning", "Government Housing" and "Planning Boards and Their Op- eration". r The three principal individual speakers to be heard during the meeting are Mr. Eric W. Thrift. Director of Metropolitan .Plan- ning, City of Winnipeg. who will be the guest speaker at the noon luncheon. Mr. Thrift will arrive by plane thll evening and will take part in the panel discuss- ion.

During tomor- row afternoon's business session he will address the gathering on "Planning and Housing".

Mr. Armstrong recently return- ed from Europe where he studied housing conditions, slum clear- ance. sanitation and allied sub- jects. At the conclusion of his visit to this city he will go to Pittsburgh. Penn.. early next week to attend the annual meet- ing of the American Society of

Planning Engineers at which he wlll be one of the principal speakers.

The planning expert said last night he would spend today in looking over the situation here and learning what progress had been made by local authorities.

In charge of arrangements here for the conference is Mr. .1. F. Connolly. Director of Town Planning. Department of Indus- try and Natural Resources. Mr. Connolly stated that this meet- ing couid have far renchini: effects In the Province as it would be gaining from the experience and advice of some of the recognized experts in this country.

to attend the conference with the majority coming from the other Maritime Provinces. Local

WASHINGTON. Sept. 26 - (APi - The Big Three countries today declared their willingness to wipe out peace-treaty restrictions on rearming of Italy.

The joint statement. and an ac- companying pledge from President Truman to back Italy for an "equal" place in support of Un- lted Nations principles. amounted to a formal welcome to Italy as a full partner in the West's defence lineup.

At the same time, State Secre- tary Dean Acheson indirectly warned Moscow against misjudg- ing the reason for this and sim- ilar moves to build up ttsltuaiions of strength" in the Western world.

"Our purpose is peace with free- dom and justice." he said.

The move to change the 1941 Italian peace pact some as a grand climax to Italian Prime Minister Alcide de Gasperi's three-day con- ference with President Truman. Acheson and other top American officials.

Fine Exhibition Of Handicrafts

At the Provincial Plowing Match yesterday at Dundas, the handi- craft division for the first time presented exhibits in fruit and flcrlculture. housekeeping. and woolen goods and fancy work. In the first class there .were 21 sec- tions out of 26 represented. con- sisting of different varieties of ap- ples. and different species of flow- ers. Mr. Clayton MacLeod, Dun- das, won the most points in the fruit sections. and Mr. W. W. An- derson. st. Peters Bay. won the most points in iiorlculture.

In Class 2. 36 sections were rep- resented out. of 38. The class. housekeeping, proved to be the most popular in the number of ex- hibits in each section. and the de- licious appearing exhibits were tempting to the beholdere. Lova- ly cakes. rolls. biscuits. doughnuts, pies. and preserves graced the two long tables, testifying to the care and ability of the ladies who look after the home.

Out of -19 sections in class three. 42 were represented. Knitted blankets. bedspreads. tea cloths. sofa cushions, quilts and rugs and many other sections made up this well-filled class. A rug exhibited by Mrs. Walter Burdett of Dundee received the highest praise from the judges. Miss Mary Robin, sup- ervisor of Women's Institutes, and Mrs. Mayleia Manning. assistant supervisor.

The success of this first handl- ctaft cxhlbiton at the provincial plowing match is well attested to by the number- of entries in each class and in each section. and also by the number of people who crowded the hall the whole after- noon, and having been crowned with such success this -year. it is expected that the officials will soon begin planning a bigger one for the coming year.

Taxes Boosted In Australian Budget

CANBERRA. Sept. 26 - (AP) -. Finance Minister Sir Arthur Fadden today introduced in par- liament a "sacrifice budget" of 2on,ooo.oco calling or a 26-per- cent increase in taxes.

He said the budget was aimed at beating inflation by drawing off part of "the deluge of ad- ditional spending power which threatens to engulf us." He add- ed that Australia's national in- came last year increased by 3000.000.000 or 36 per cent. due largelyito higher wool prices.

Fadden announced heavy in- creases in sales tax. The gen- eral rate was raised to 12 1-2 per cent and special rates ranging from 20 to 66 2-8 per cent were placed on less essential goods such as sports equipment. toyl. games. confectionary and men's toilet requisites.

Income taxes were increased by 1-0 per cent.
