Some hundreds of Summerside people were apparently sitting by the" telephones at ten dclock last night with fingers on the dials waiting for the magic min-. ute when they could give them the first twirl.

So fast did the calls commence that Mayor Henry Wedge‘: call to Mr. A. R. Brennan was prob- ably only officially the first call. The connections had DBEH/LJIONQTI by hundreds of toothpicks stuck in the mechanism and when the ivord came to "cut-over" six em- ployees working as fast as they could pulled them all out and opened the connections to the dial system.

Actually it might have been as late as three minutes after ten when all phones were cut over. Telephone company officials said afterwards that everything went smoothly and without a hitch. One of them said that if one could listen on all the conversa- tions they would be very much alike and thewords “it wo ", in a surprised tone, would be heard many times.

They said that the rush of calls u-as no grcaicr than in other places u-hurc they have put in a d.ai sysitcni. An interesting pro- gram had been arranged for the cicciision which commenced at 9:15, Mr. D. M. Gass, provincial manager, acted as chairman and congratulated Mayor Wedge on his reCCni election.

He expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation re- cclved by the company from the Town officials, Board of Trade and citizens ggnerally. Mr. A. M. MacKay, Halifax, general man- ager of the coimipany also offered congratulations 1o Mayor Wedge and said he was happy to be pre- scnt for this auspicious occasion, which is a great sicpjorward for the Town.

Hc said his company is proud to supply Summerside with this fine stone and brick building which would not be out of place on ihc main street of any city.

He paid tribute to the staffs under Mr. Leigh Stewart and Miss Clara Mountain who have

carried on during difficult times and with over-loaded equipment

Growth of Service

To give some idea of how the ielcphone service has grown in Suin-mei-slde he said that in'the ten years from 1929 to 1939 the ‘number of stations in Summer- slde increased by 116 and in the ncxt ten years the increase jLImpFd to 1070. Mr, MacKay said that the dial equipment and toll board installed are the best in the communication world. He explained that in installing the

manually operated, the equip- ment and facilities are up-to-dete and adequate and before s dial system csn be installed it will be necessary to make s large ex- tension to the present building. He said he hoped this would be done in 1951 and sa shortly after s: possible the same system as in Summerside would be installed. Mayor Wedge wdcomed Mr. MacKay and other onticials to Summerside. He congratulated the company on the erection of this very fine building and the installation of the dial system. He said, “I am especially pleased that my first duty as Mayor of Summerside is to inaugurate s new service to its people." He also extended sincere thanks to Mr. Stewart and Miss Mountain and their staff for the splendid service that has been given in the pest, under great difficulty. Mr. R. Brennan. represent- ing the Public Utilities Commis- sion, said that the Telephone Com- pany and the Island staff are to be congratulated on this great improvement in their service which is "admittedly ~overdue.“ However, he said, the supply situation has been difficult and the Town of Summerside has in- deed an improved type oif service. Mr. R. S. Hinton, president of the Board of Trade, expressed his thanks at being invited and in reference to Lhc fact that this is the first such service in the Province said, “We feel that ours

is the best Town so it is only fitting that we should be the first."

Others who spoke included ex- Mayor J. F. Arnelt-t, Mr. Donald Baker, Rev. K. G. Sullivan and Mr Waiter Grant, Charlottetown, retired Island manager of ihc Company.

Recalls Old Days

The last speaker was Dr. John F. MacNeill who told of operat- ing a switchboard in Kensing- ton in 1889 and oif the p“lf‘i'ill.lVC equipment he had to work with At that time, he said, there were only stix telephones in Summer- side. '

Telephone company officials present in addition to Mr. Gass and Mr, MacKay were: A, G. Archibald, general commercial manager, Halifax; G. R. Star- ratt, general plant manager, Hali- fax; W. S. Dickie, general office manager, Halifax, and Mr. H. A. Duncan, chieif installer of Hali- fax. who supervised the ixistaila- tion job here.

At the end of the program Mr. A. R. Brennan, who, had been called earlier, arrived. Mr. Bren. nan has been in ill health for some time and does not ge-t out very much.

After the official part program was over the guests present partook of a delicious lunch served by the lady members of the staff.-—S.

The Borden Nationals triumphed over the Summerslde Crystals at Crystal Rink last night, edging the Mclver-Grant aggregation by the score of 6 w 5. The visitors out- played the home team widely in the first period. skating off the ice on the big end of s 5 to 1 score. Their passing plays were clicking much better than that of the Crystals in this frame. Toey Richard and R. MacTavish were particularly brilliant. sharing four of the five goals between them.

The Crystals started to find themselves-in the sandwich session and outscored the Nationals 2 to 1. The Y. P. S. of the Bunimerside Trinity United Church was held 1n Eivivorth Hall tm 'I‘uesdsy even- ing with the president, Mr. Keith R-Oserwn. in the chair. The open- lfls hymn "o Worship the King" with Miss Edith Palmer at the piano was followed by the Scrip- ture reading in John 3 by Miss Irene Smsilinsn. All interesting film on “Lessons in Learning" from the National Film Board was followed by a recreational period. 4 —8 The Junior B. Y. P. U. of the Summerslde Baptist Church held its regular meeting on ‘mesday even- ing in the vestry with a good at- tendance. Tommy MacKenzie, who conducted the devotional, opened with the hymn "Tell me the story 0f Jesus". A talk on "Western Missions“ was given by the minis- ter. At the close of the meeting contests were enjoyed. The total team scores to date are Knicker- bockers 2-4, Thinkers 18.

Mrs. Robert Hogg conducted the worship service of the Young Msriiied Peoples Group or the Summerside Baptist church on Tuesday evening in its vestry, opening with the singing of hymn "The church's one foundation", There was a splendid attendance and Mrs. Colin Waugh presided over the business session, The special feature of the evening was a debate “Resolved that woman's place is in the home". the nega- tive side winning by popular vote, Those speaking for the affirmative were Mr. Ernest Allwright, Mrs. Clarence Mercer for Mr. Mercer, who was absent, and Mr. Roy Lid- stone; for the negative were Mrs. Colin Waugh, Mrs. Bruce Johnston and Mrs. Ernest Morrison. At the close of the meeting the members assisted in fixing up the new hall in readiness for the annual con- gregational meeting on Thursday. The T. C. A. team won three points. Refreshments were served by Mrs. J. I-f. Leuty, Mrs. E. J. Barrass and Mrs. Mercer.

Corporal A. Green of the RCMP. Charlottetown, was guest speaker at the Y. P. S. of the Summerside Church of Christ on Tuesday evening at the regular meeting. H15 theme was "Youth and Police" and he stated that the police were for the purpose of guarding the life of a community. Since 1945 the R. C. The young lad had been taken to the Prince County Hospital where a skiifui diagnosis by Dr. W, R. Auld determined that he had a brain tumor and must be rushed to Halifax without delay.
