Research men have shown that epileptic flts occur less often on Sundays and other Holidays, and Mondays and the days following other Holidays.

What is the lesson?

That rest is a great factor in les- sening the number and the sever- ity of the attacks. It often happens that a patient la put to bed in hoc- pital in order to obtain an oppor- tunity to observe an attack-and yet, in spite of the fact that no medicine of any kind has been given, the patient has no attacks.

However it is not possible, nor is it perhaps necessary, for all pat- ients suffering from epilepsy to rest

states that as very few of these patients are below normal mentally, and thus are able to take their place in the world, a few suggestions m- garding the care they should get or the care they should take of them- selves might be of great help to the patient, to the family, and to the employer.

Asto the patient. Every effort should be made by careful examlno ation, laboratory tests, X ray and other methods to find any cause for the convulsions or anything that might aggravate the convulsions. The patients condition, chances in life and for happiness should be discussed frankly with him. What the patient may reasonably expect from treatment and his willing. ness to follow the treatment. Just how his habits-sleep, diet, bowels, exercise, work, social habits-play an important part in preventing, or lessening the number of attacks. All mystery, or feeling of impend- ing danger, must be removed, and a feeling of optimism should re- place pessimism.

The patient must understand that he himself must work out a great part of his cure, by following the physician's orders absolutely.

Education of the family. The fam- ily shouldbe told all that the phy- sician is trying to do, and told also, all that ls known about epilepsy and its treatment. The famfiy must encourage the patient to do things for himself and others, to be really one of them in cvedv sense, with no favors shown. He must be treated, and he must want himself to be treated as if he were normal in every way.

As to the employer. The em- ployer must use the same methods as the family, that is to expect the patient to measure up in every way to his work~no shorter hours, nor, on the other hand, no longer hours, than other employees.
