Leopold and Louise.

The Py) scess is continually sufferiug froin the effect of injuries received by the accident last winter, and the Prince, it is ollicially stated, met with a slight ac- cident while salmon fishing and sprained his ley. Both, therefore, leave Canadian shores indisposed, ‘The Princess, following the advice ef her physicia@, will visit the watering places of Germany, and on re- turning will stay for a time in England. It is to be hoped that the bracing sea air, and (Uierman mineral waters, will have a good effect on the Priucess, and that after a few months rest she will regain her strength, and return to Canada with re- newesd spirits.

The Jesuit Decrees.

The French Government preposes to en- ferce the ati-Jesuit decrees, preemptorily, and his ordered prefects to enforce the ex- pulsiou of all members of the order from France. If this command is carried out, private houses, where Jesuit Fathers are now siaying,will be broken into and clergy- men taken by force to the’ frontier ; but curiously enough, there is nothing ‘to pre- vent them from at once returning, even on the sume trains and che same cars, with the oflicers who teok them to the frontier, and tie process of this nominal* expulsion may be considered ad infinitum. There is no law by which a man can be prevented from living in France simply because he is a member ef the Society of Jesuits. He may be forbidden to feside in a house belonging to the order, but otherwise he has a right of living in France, and if he is expeiled, he cai come back again without incurring any penalty. The Jesuits in Lyons have made arrangements te remeve their educa- tional establishments to England, prebably going to join their brethren at Longhurst.

Great Britain was threwn into a social ferme nt recently over a sentence pronuwiicsd by a Magistrate in the Clerkenwell Police Court, of London City, upon Catherine Connolly, who had visited her husband in the Clerkenwell House of Detention, and supplied him with a quarter ounce of chew- ing tobacco concealed in a tart. A sen- tence of twenty-one days at hard labor was imposed upon her, and this involved the separation ef the mother from her child six years old. Within twelve hours every Lon don ) ournal blazed with an indignant leader on the subject, and petitions for mercy be- gan to pour into the Home Office. Of course Sir William Vernon Harcourt issued a pardon as soon as red tape weuld permit.

Pelee island, Ont., says: ‘* There is now living on this Island an aged lads, Mrs. Mary McCormack, who was born in 1792, in July of that year, at San lwich, Essex, the child of John and Mary Cornwall, both U. KE. refugees, and the first of whom was the first member of Parliament ever elected in the old western district of Ontario.
