SUMMERSIDE, Sept. 24.
The atten lance last night was larger than at any time during the match. The excite- ment is on the increase. During the even- ing both men were presented with boquets. At one time Clow was fifteen laps behind the Unkown. At 10.30 Clow Was one lap behind, but left the track. At 11 o'clock the score stood ;
Unknown, 130 miles 21 laps, Clow, 130 miles 13 laps.
It was reported during the evening that an attempt was made to tamper with Clow’s drinks but was frustrated. There appears to be some grounds for this report. Clow promises to make it lively for the Unknown during the day. He says he docs not win his races in one day.
LATER. At 2 o'clock this evening the score stood: Unknown, 149 miles 5 Japs. Clow, 149 miles 1 lap.
Unknown leading by 4 laps.
At 2.20 both had completed the one hun dred and (ifty-first mile. It is said that the ‘‘ Unknown’s” name is O'Carrigan-—an lrishman.

One of those events which periodically agitate fashionable society teok place very quietly at St. Martin’s church to-day, when the rector. the Rev. J. Philip Dumoulin, M. A., Rector of Trinity Church, St. John, N. B., united in the holy bonds of matri- mony Robert W. C. Connel, Esq., of Sals girth, Perthshire, Scetland, and Miss Brydges, the pretty and accomplished daughter of Mr. C. J. Brydges, of the Hudson Bay Company.

The jury on the body of Lucy Barnes brought in a verdict that he committed aan while under temporary aberration of mind. Deceased had bgen accustomed to the use of laudnum and had been suffering mentally on account of financial difticulties. He performed yesterday afternoon at Ex hibition, and his closing piece was a marvel of execution. The multitude on the floor had to be kept back by main force, while the railings of the galleries above were black wit!: listeners. Finally, the pianist concluded, rose up sharply and said ‘ I’ve
layed my last piece. How did you like it’? Mr. Shaw, believing that he referred to the piece as the last on the programme, and delighted with its rendition, patted him on the shoulder, saying, ‘* You played famously.” Mr. Barnes stood for a mo- ment, looking up to the galleries, then ob- serving, ‘‘I never played to so large an audience,” and withdrew from the build- ing. His Excellency visited .the Exhibition again to day, and was present at Oaledon- jan Society games, where he received a pre sentation and address, and replied.

Barnot has accepted the Ministry of Pub- lic Works. The Marquis De Naailles deii- nitely declined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and that position has been offered to Adwira! Jaures, whose reply is_ anxiously expected. The health of Admiral Dupre is so bad that he cannst accept to be Minister of Marine.

After six, o'clock last night the attend- ance, which up to that time had been sinall, began to increase; and as the contest ap- peared close, the excitement and interest inanifested by those present beyan to show itself to a considerable extent. Clow, who had been the favorite throughout the day, was beginning to lose ground in the estima- tion of those who, early in the morning, thought him the better man of the two. The Unknown has, by his pluck and evident determination to win, made a favorab’e impression upon the crowd, and as he forged ahead of Clow he was repeatedly cheered... At six o'clock the Unknown was three laps ahead. During the next half hour Clow made a determined effort and took the lead, each scoring 46 miles. This effort brought forth hearty cheers. At 7.20 Clow was leading by one lap, but left the track for a few minutes. The Unknown took advantage of his opponent's absence, and by the time Clow took his piace, led by four laps. In the 49th mile both men started on the walk. It was here that people saw a pretty contest between the two on asquare walk for the lead, but the Unknown kept his lead; finally both men started on a jog. From now until eight o'clock both men kept on a pretty smart run, when the score stood : Unknown, 54 miles 24 laps; Clow, 54 miles 15 Japs. During the next hour Clow gained two laps upon the Unknown, the score standing : Unknown, 60 miles 7 laps ; Clow, 60 miles. From nine o'clock until eleyen -the end of the first day's race—the enthusiasm of the supporters of both showed itself. In the next two hours both men put on extra speed, and for a time made things lively for each other. Shortly before ten o'clock the Unknown left the track, but soon ap- again, and at ten o'clock was twelve laps ahead of Clow. Frem ten o'clock up to eleven both men _ went into the running ata lively rate and at 114 o'clock when the referee, Mr. McNeill, sung out ‘“‘time’s up,” the score stood, Unknown, 71 miles 17 laps; Clow, 71 miles 3 laps; leaving the Unknown with a lead of fourteen laps. The enthusiasm of the crowd knew no bounds and cheer after cheer was given ior the leading man.
Who the Unknown is cannot be answered at present, but it is evident that he is an adept in the business. His backer went so far as to-say that the rumor as to the Unknown being Merritt was wrong, and that he considered him a better man than the American. During the day both men felt in good condition, Clow several times saying he felt ‘‘ first-class” while the Un? known was ‘‘ tip-top.”
SECOND DAY.
Mr. McNeill, the referee, made a few remarks before sending the men off. At 11 o'clock sharp, he gave the word, and Unknown taking the lead forged ahead of During the next hour there difference between the two men. Between 12 and 1 o’clock Clow put on some extra speed and gained 4 laps on the Unknown. At ten minutes to one the Unknown left the track. While he was: off the track, Clow gained 4 extra laps—leaving Unknown but Glaps of a lead; the score standing, Un- known, 82 miles, 24 laps; Clew, 81 miles, i8laps. By 2 o'clock the Unknown hada lead of 11 laps. A stranger offered @ prize of one dollar to Unknown if he would gain two laps in six-—Clow at regular gait. Un- known spurted out aud won it. He then made Clow an offer, if he would gain two | in five, but he would not accept. At 2.25 both men were even, when Unknown spurted and took the lead. At 4.20, Clow was handed a bouquet of flowers by a lady. He held it up triumphantly and spurted, passing Unknown several laps. He then threw it on the stage and came down to his regular pace. Betting now commenced in right earnest—even lmoaney was prt up. At 4 o'clock the score stood ; Unknown, 96 miles, G@ laps ; Clow, 96. miles, 3 laps. At 4.15 Unknown left the track and Clow) had passed him by 5 laps when he took the track again and in a quarter of an hour more the Unknown had evertaken Clow and had one lap ahead, both running at a fast pace. Both men appear in good con- dition. It is expected that Clow will make
