In some quartera it is believed’ tha General Warren ip announcing that he was heavily attacked at Spion Kop on Wednesday, added the words, “ position untenable,” and they were intenJed te ap ply to his own position aad not that of the Boers,

In the absence of details it is, however, not pessible to form any positive argu- ment. But it is certain that such a man as General Warren would not have order- ed the evacuation of the kopjeif he had net had a very strong reason for doing it.

It ig only too probable thet when the news of the check reaches Ladysmith, it will have a most depressing effect upon the whole garrison.

CASUALTIES. Loxpoy, Jan. 26.— General Bu!- ler reports that the British casu- alties on January 24th were:

killed, officers 6, non-commissioued officer* and men 18; wounded, officers 12, non- commissioned and men 142.

Missing—31 men, the killed include Colonel Buchanan Riddell, of the King’s Roya: Rifles.

It is not clear whether the casualties in~ elude those at Spion Kop or only those fighticg prier to the Spion Kop eugages ment.
