The Fishing Bounty.

DR. MCINTYRE’S LIBEL RESENTED.

Sir,—It would be difficult to say what Dr. Mclatyre and Mr. McVane mean by the term “regular fisherman.” The law requires that a fisherman shall have been engaged three months at fishing during the season, and that he shall have caught 2,500 ‘lbs. of fish, in order to enable him to the ‘bounty. Mr. McVane ir a miller, and a |very attentive one, too. How can he be miller and fishermen at one and the same time? Is he one of those included in Dr. Mclntyre’s charge that ‘‘parties were indaced to present claims for bouncy who | were not entitled to receive it.” The Doctor will, I presume, say that he is not. For my part, I believe that the Doctor’s charge is a libel upon the fishermen of the Eastern end of this Island; and I hope, Sir, that unless he withdraws it, they will sooner or later make him feel the force of their re- sentment. It is too bad that we should be defamed by the man whom we hase honored, and whom we have treated as onr familiar friend—and all because a miller and a few others choose to lay claims to the | Bounty.

Victoria Notes.

On Monday morning last might be seen passing through this village, glittering in the bright morning sunshine, a covered vehicle, drawn by a span of grey horses, and containing five persons, all chatting pleasantly and apparently enjoying them- selves immensly. This was the new stage coach en route for Charlottetown. In the front seat sat the contractor himself, look- ing jolly as usual; the very personification of good nature. Mr. Collett is one of those meu who always appears jovial, apparently at peace with himself and all mankind. The proverb ‘*A good conscience and a con- tented mind make a man happy,” holds good in this instance. As this was the first turnout of Mr. Collett’s covered vehicle, when they arrived at the Post Office in this village, they were greeted by three hearty cheers from the spectators who had assem- bled to see the display. Itis quite a long time since we have had the pleasure of see- ing, on this route, a properly-equipped mail-coach for the conveyance of passen- gers. Not since Messrs. Leard and Me- Farlane had the mail contract. For the past few years the manner im which our

factory to the general public. Everybody is highly satisfied with the present con- tractor’s work, and we know he has the energy and pluck to carry out to the end what he undertakes. Mar success crown his efforts is our earnest wish and fervent prayer.

Wright Bros. have opened here a large store, and are doing a rushing business. The want of a general store in this place has long been felt. We wish them every success.

The farms and gardens all around pre- sent a busy scene. Everything looks cheer- ful and pleasant, save the ice, which still remains in the Strait.

Persons having a relish for rural scenery would do well to take a trip to Crapaud at this season of the year, on the good steam- boat Heather Belle, which has excellent accommodation for passengers.

School Meeting at Cardigan Bridge.

A largely attended meeting of the rate- payers of the above named district was held on the 26th inst., for the purpose of voting money towards building a new school house. W. P. Lewis, Esq., was elected chairman of the meeting, and the undersigned secretary.

It was decided to establish a grade school, the new building to be 25x50 feet, with 12 feet post. The trustees were authorized, by a unanimous vote, to issue debentures, redeemable in five years by annuai instal ments, for $600; to select a school site as near the centre of the district as practicable; and to cali for tenders immediateily. These proposals were thoroughly discussed, and carried without a single dissentient voice.

A vote of thanks was tendered the chair- man, the proceedings were ordered to be published, and the meeting adjourned.

The site proposed for the new school is the summit of a dry, airy slope on Pleasant street, commanding a beautiful view of the harbor and village.

The people of Cardigan Bridge are de- termined not to be any longer behind the age in the matter of school accommodation, and they will soon own a school house which will be a credit to the district.

At Monte Carlo it is the custom to fill the pockets of suicides with bank-notes, so that it may be seen that they did not kill themselves on account of losses, A recent letter from there relates how a presumably dead Irishman succeeded in getting his pockets filled a short time ago. LONDON THREATENED WITH A PLAGUE—ANTI VACCINATIONISTS DENOUNCED.

London is threatened with a smallpox scare. The malady is alarmingly prevalent in several of the metropclitan districts, and is spreading from the city to the adjoining provinces, several of which are already badly investe!. Some idea of the present prevalence of the plague may be formed from the magnitude of the efforts which have already been forced upon the authori- ties to combat the disease. The city of London alone, siace the start of the plague last November, has expended $250 000 for additional accommodations for the con- stantly increasing nuuber of the afflicted. It is now proposed to erect new metropol- itan smallpox hospitals at a cost of $750,- 000, making a total of $1,000,000 added to the public expense by the persistent ravages of this malady alone. The anti- vaccinationists are making capital out of the scourge by pointing to its prevalence and steady spread as unanswerable proof vf the futility of vaccination as a prevent- ive. The regular practitioners are becom- ing alarmed. Thay denounce the anti- vaccinationists as enemies to the publio health, and insist that the energetic preach- ing of their propaganda has been the prin- cipal cause of the pcesent sptead of small- pox, because it has so largely shaken the faith of the poorer classes in the efticacy of Jenner’s method. The doctors are getting up petitions urging the Government to immediately adopt the most energetic measures to put an end to the mischievous work of the anti-vaccinationists by making penal the further inculcation of their propaganda, which, if allowed te continue, the petitioners declare, will soon subject the whole of England to a disastrous scourge.

A Phenomena.

Shubenacadie, N. 8., has a queer phe- nomena in the shape of a pond of water. It is situated near the village on the road to Maitland, and is known as the ‘“‘Biue Pond.” It derives its name from the color of the water, which is a!ways of a very dark blue. A large number of traditions are told by the old inhabitants of this little piece of water, such as ghost stories, drown- ing accidents, etc. It is said that it has no bottom, but no person has been inter- ested enough to test the truth of the saying by trying. The edges are mirey and soft, being composed of quicksands, The pond even during the dryest season of the year, has been always full of water. Last week, however, it was noticed that the water got lower until it Was nearly dry. The water in the river near the pond was perceived coming up from the bottom, and it is be- lieved that this water runs from the pond. About six years ago the same thing hap- pened except that the water came spouting up in a field about two hundred yards dis- tant, and after a few weeks the connection was cut off, and it is not known how. The water of the pond has a queer taste, very sour, and is what is known as ‘‘mineral water,”

A petition representing liquidators of the Exchange Bank, of Montreal, has been granted, and writs against Buntin, one of the directors, has been issued for the re- covery of ten thousand dollars deposit alleged illegally withdrawn by him after the bank suspended. Liquidators have given notice of third call of twenty per cent. on account of double liability on cap- ital stock, payable 30th June, Roe of first call have been anything but satis- factory, the amount received to date not exceeding twenty-five thousand dollars, while over eighty thousand dollars are due.

Some years ago Mr. Dana, of the New York Sun tovk it into his head that he would like to experiment with mushrooms, So, at # great cost, he built a great mush- room cave, got a Frenchman, to whom he paid a large salary, and began his experi- ment. The first year it cost him $4,000, but to-day he is not only raising all of these delicious fungi that he wants for his own table, but his cave yields so many mushrooms that the gardener as been able to sell enough to pay, with interest, for the expenditure.

A man named John McKay (a brother- in-law of the veteran coachman Harvey Strickland) having been knocked out of @ wagon en the read to Stanley (near Fred- ericton, N. B.) by a man nemed Fraser, and run over by the wheels so as to receive injuries from which he has since died. The wayon contained twelve other men, some of whom were under the influence ef liquor. McKay leaves a wife and family for whom he was the only support.

Reporis from along the line of the C. P. R. go to show that seeding is now nearly completed. The acreage sown is very much larger than last year’s. The business cut- look is consequently brightened. A merei- ful frost and abundant harvests would leave very little for the Northwest agitators to work upon. So we suppose they are con- tinually praying for sharp frosts and an ad- verse season.

Balaclava, although its name will be ever famous in history as associated with the famous light cavalry charge, has hitherto remained sn unimportant town. It is, however, now beginning to develope re- sources, and bids fair *o become a fashion- able resort for invalide. A medical com- mission visiting it last summer has reported

suddenly jumped up exclaimed, ‘‘I am ruined!” and rushed into the gardens Almost immediately afterwards the guards heard a vistol shot and then a ery of pain ; and, rushing to the spot, found the Irish- man apparently dead. It was dark, with no one around, so they filled his pockets with money and left him to {be discovered in the morning. They had scarcely gone out of sight, however, before the lrishman
