RICA. _ The probability that, in the impending war in Euro , the possessions of Russia on the North est Coast of this Continent, may subjected to a blockade, and perhaps to ii. seizure, renders it it matter of some interest to know_somcthing, both in regard to Russian America, and also the present condition of their squadron in the Pacific. _ Although a. writer in the North American, in an apparent disposition to make the most of the colossal proportions of Russia, on the map, refers in suing to these possessions in Ameri- t}tt,.t'l.l if t_ cy were of some moment, their value is, in reality, of the most nominal dcscri tion. To be sure, on the mo. it extends from 50 to 714 north latitude, mm 1380 to 1080 west longitude. Yet the total population of this vast region, aborigines included, is but 60,000 inhabitants. 0 whole interior is unexplored rind unknown, and at least one third lies witli- in the arctic zone. The whole area. is about four hundred thousand squnrc miles. The increase of the United States in population has been wonderful. Even the“ Cavaliers who settled in the south- ern colonies, were decided in their attachment to Protestant principles. So were the Dutch and Swedes who sett ed on the Hudson and the Dale- ware, midwsy between the Episcopalians of the South, and the Puritans of the North. So were

villiam Penn and his followers, who settled in how Jersey and Pennsylvania, between the Dutch and the Swedes. _ It was not only Protcstantisin—t.he Protestant- ism of the British Isles, for the most psrt—but ilic_ olitical and civil institutions of England, whici the early colonists carried with them, and planted all along the Atlantic coast, from Maine to Georgia. Now those institutions, after having been widely established through the great central valley, from the lakes to the Gulph of Mexico. are seen producing their appropriate fruits in the great State of California, and the two territories of Oregon and Wushington—soon to come
