Davies “promised faithfully, if returned, to advocate and carry out strong resolutions to have the Belfast and Murray Harbor Railway built.” The people of Belfast have better memories than Mr. Davies gave them credit for—mueh better memories than he has; for he forgot (after he was elected) te advocate the Belfast-Murray Harbor railway in Parliament. Let this latter fact be borne in mind.

—The Montreal Wittness described Mr. Patterson’s effort in the recent Grit meet- | ing in Montreal in extravagant terms as | demolishing protectionist argument and | lifting the audience up to clear heights of economic vision. Whereupon the Brant- ford Courier, published within easy d°s- tance of Mr. Patterson’s large and growing factories, expresses regret that when Mr. Patterson ad his audience in such a mobilized and airy condition, he had not | exerted his magic powers a little more and given them a clear view of the town of Brantford. LETTERS 10 THE EDITOR.

UNFAITHFUL REPRESENTATIVES SHOWN UP.

Sir,—On the 13th instant, I received what [ thought was a special favor from the Patriot newspaper; viz—a copy of tie Daily Patriot of the 7th, with an article entitled “The Tory Phonograph,” marked very clearly with red ink. A little enquiry has revealed the fact that this same issue of the Daily Patriot has been scattered broadcast over the District with this editor- ial marked in red ink in the same way, so that the Patriot has not, after all, been pay- ing me a special favor, beyond what I be- lieve has been done in hundreds of cases all over Belfast and Murray Harbor. The heavy storm which delayed its arrival at au earlier date is only I presume a precur- sor of the bigger storm of disapprebation with which it has been received by the people.

The lame excuses of the Patriot will not be accepted as far as the railway te Belfast and Murray Harbor is concerned. In view of the whole course ofthe Patriot and the Grit Party in regard to the Branch Railway to Belfast, I would suppose they would be last to go to ancient history, or perhaps more correctly to a period twenty years ago, a fifth of a century as the chief of the Patriot staff puts it. The his- tory of that period shows clearly, if any- thing can, the betrayal of the interest of Belfast and Murray, and that by the lead- ers of the Grit party in this Province then as they are the leaders of that to-day. The great lights of that party to-day are the very men who figured so conspicously in 1873. They are also the very men who look for the suffrages of the people to-day. Yes, that editorial] of the Patriot would do very well if everything that paper and its party said about a railway to Belfast was blotted out. But the record stands, and it is too strong a testimony againt them. Who represented Murray Harbor whi» the Grit party sacrificed its interests in 1873? Was it not Mr. L. H. Davies? Who not only sacrificed Belfast as its re- presentative then, but persists in placing obstacles in the way of remedying bis ne- glect? Who? Who but the writer of this very article in the Patriot, signed “The Tory Phonograph.”

And what does this Tory, no, but Grit phonograph, say? Does it lend a helping hand to the people of Belfast and Murray Harbor? Is there ome sentence in that article which would encourage them to persist in their demands? No, not one. The whole ef that article is the greatest piecs of political writhing of which its author is capable. This means e@ good deal. Butihe whole drift is against thie railway.

For the benefit of the large number who do not read the Patriot, let me give a few extracts; Ist. ‘f Im 1873 the branch rail- way in question could not have been con- structed without seriously embarrassing the finances of our local government.” Seriou-ly embarrassing, indeed! Who ever sawagrit government without its being seriously embarrassed? I should think they were embarrassed. Their hawking of debentures all over the provin- ces, without realizing enough to pay the expenses of their agent, would seem to show they were embarrassed enough in al! conscience. But the grit party might tel] us, who or what embarrassed them? The branch railway did not, at any rate. Now, after all, is this not the “bad boy’s” lame excuse? Had not the Patriot better stick te what he said in reference to the railway in his issue of afew days preyiously? Here it is: “It (this railway) has scarcely been mentioned as a possible undertaking.” Now, which of these statements are we to believe 7 Let the electors of East Queen’s decide what fajth is ta be placed ip a Party anda paper which raises such noise and dust and contradiction when they are only seeking their rights in a law- ful and constitutional way.

It is hard for a paper or a Party which has no consistency to be consistent—no not for one week or from issue to issue.

The next thing to which the Grit Pho- nograph refera is its statement showing

how much the Grit party saved by not building a Railway to Belfast in 1873.

But the whole thing is such an insult to the intelligence of Belfast, that I will not quote it. The plain meaning of it is that the grit party in this province claims it as the one thing to their credit that they have saved $39,000 a year by proving un- faithful to Belfast. Tell it not in Gath. But that is what the Patriot says io short metre. Time may have iis revenge, ang the grit party may not, and Iam sure sould not, havea chance again to show iow much they saved*by being unfaithful to Belfast or any other district on the Island. Those who are unfaithful to one constituency will be unfaithful to another, and the spectacle of the Patriot making this exhibition must surely be gratifying to its friends in Belfast. More anon. THE GRIT PRESS AND THE RAILWAY.

Sjrx,—The Grit press are shouting brib- ery and corruption becanse the people hac @ meeting at Eldon on the 30th January last. Their record is so pure and clean that they cannot stand this, They are, one would suppose, about to disown every- thing which entitled them to be ealled the “ Organized Hypocrisy.” Perhaps a recollection of what follows will persuade them that they are fully entitled to the name yet. In February, 1891, Mr. L. H. Davies attended a railway meeting, and not only advocated it but promised faith- fully, if returned, to advocate and carry out strong resolutions to have the railway built. That meeting was held at Cale- donia about one month before the Domin- ion election of 1891. Did the Grit press hold up its hands in holy horror? Did they shout bribery and corruption? No. It was ali right—it might help Mr. Davies. Further, to Mr. Davies’ discredit he it said, he has never opened his mouth gbout it since. Senator Ferguson was at that meet- ing, and he has manfually fulfilled his pledge, though defeated. His speech in the Senate did more for a railway for Bel- fast than was ever done before. The Grit party has short memories, or they think the people soon forget. The Patriot and Guardian should note this.

Island Government, has been called to the Senate in succession to Lieutenant-Governor Howlan, and the otner that Tuesday, the 26th, has been set apart as the day for hearing the appeal of the Roman Catholic minority of Mani- toba for remedial legislation,

Of the Cheese and Butter Factories in operation in 1894, we furnished, to the satisfaction of all concerned, the necessary apparatus for the following:—Winsloe,

ampton, Tryon, Crapaud, Graud River, Dunk River, Mount Stewart, and Vernon River Bridge.

In the summer of 1994 we made nine Cheese Vats (each holding from 640 to 700 gallons of milk), and two Butter Vats (each everaging 400 gallons of milk}; no complaints were made—satisfaction given. From our large experience in the past we are now better than ever prepared to meet the wants of Dairymen. We guaran- tee satisfaction, and respectfully solicit the patronage of those who are contem- lating the erection of Cheese or Butter actories.

Our make of Vats is superior to all others, and our fifteen and twenty gallon Cans are the best and cheapest in the pro- vince.
