The “ Asia” Disaster. The following is told by Mr, Tinkiss, | one of the survivors

All went well until about 8 o’clock on} Thursday a. m, when a siiff breeze | arose, but no ove apprehended any dan- ger. Afierthis it commenced to blow | furiously, and my uncle took me aside) and said in an excited voice, “ The ves- | selis doomed. We will all go dows.” | The passengers, about sixty in number, rushed on to the deck. The waves appeared to be runving mountains high: The scene on deck end in the cabin at this time J] will never forget while | live. Strong men were on their knees praying, women were frantic with fear, clasping their children to their breasts, and calling in heart-broken vo'ess on God to save them. We all realized that we were face to tace with death and that our time was limited, perhaps to min- utes, even seconds. I only heard the Captain give one order, that was to throw the cargo overboard. No a'tempt | was made to lower the boats, as they would have been iustantly dashed to pieces. The steamer had got into the trough of the sea. The enzives appear- ed to ‘be working, but refused to obey the helm. The waves were dashing over the boat, carrying away everything mov- able. We felt her going down, when the men rushed to the hurricane deck in order to have another half minute’s ex- istence in this world. A moment after she knocked over, going down stern forward. The cries of the poor help less creatures, as they were swept away by the angry waters, still ring in my ears. The sight was terrible, and heaven grant that I or any one else may vever see « similar one. Before going oa the hurricane deck, I had put on a life-pre- server, avd as I felt the boat go over, | called to my uncle tocome. He hesi- tated, and I never saw him again. I got into a small boat, bat it immediately upset in the water. Several per- sons got hold of my lite-preserver and dragged me down. I fought desperately, and disengaged myself, After doing so, I swam for another boat, in which were 18 persons, including the captain, purser and mate. I asked the purser for God's sake to help me, and he assisted meéon board, at the same (time saying it was ne use, we would all go dowt. For asecond my eyes turned to the wreck. The water iu the vicinity was black with a struggling mass of humanity, clinging to pieces of timber, some crying piteously, others lifting thei voices to heaven. I saw a third boat, but it upset. We drifted on the boat continually upsetting with every heavy wave. Miss Christie Morrison aud my- self had hold of ropes at either end of the life-boat, aad every time it went over we escaped the blows rained by the guowale upon those thrown out. The blows reduced our number to 12. We were about 20 miles from shore with only one paddie. One by ene the un- fortunates in the boat dropped off and were drowued. About five o,clock in the evening shore was sighted, aud acry of “saved’ went up. The mate struck up the familiar tune, ‘‘Pull for the shere, sailors ; pull for the shore,” in which we joined. Mr. Little, of Sault Ste. Marie, about an hour afterwards, lay down in the bottom of the boat and expired, and the mate died when we were in sight of the lighthouse at Byng Inlet. He was supported to the last by Miss Morrison who bore bravely up. Towards morning the captaiu passed away. At that time there were five bodies in the bottom of the boat. At daybreak we struck the beach, but Miss Morrison was unable to walk. 1 removed all the bodies to land, and that night we slept onthe beach. Saturday evening we hailed aa Indian passing in a boat. He furnished us with food, the first taken since Wedueaday. The Indian agreed to take us to Parry Sound, where we were kindly treated. Miss Merrison is sti'l confined to bed, but the doctors are confident of her re- covery. She is a very brave young woman, aud her equal is not living to-
