The tidal wave of intemperance was passing over the city of St. John. He had been told at Hualitax that whi'e St. Jobo was seeking aid from abroad, orders were passing over thewwires ordering liquor from Europe - and in a short time we hear of 3 000 tons of rum arriving here. (Ap- plause.) He had been told, too, that it was no use to come to St. John—that the Ministers here were afraid to open their mouths on the temperance question; that the Mayor was on the side of intemperance (applause), and that the police of the city worked in the interest of the intemperance people. (Long and continued applause. The speaker amusingly described the arrest of drunken men in St. John, and condemned in strong terms Sunday liquor

selling.

At Port Hawkesbury he had been toid that even the ministers drank —on the sly

heard that some St. John ministers are afraid to preach a temperance sermon Applause. ;

He had seen here men dodging into low places—men from their appearance taat he would have said were Aldermen if -he had met them any place other than St. Jobn. He read from the Danbury News the statement that liquor was sold in St. John that would make biind men see serpents thirty yards off.

St. John was the worst place in this respect he had ever heard of.

THB COURSE OF THE CONGO.

The entire area the Congo drains em.- braces about 860,000 square mules. its source is in that high plateau south of Lake Tanganyika, in a country called Bisa or Ubise by the Arabs. The principai tributary feeding Bemba Lake is the Cham~ besi,a broad, deep river, whose extreme sources must be placed about longitude 33 deg. east. Bemba Lake, called Bangwelo by Livingstone, its discoverer, is a large body of shallow water, about 8 400 square miles in extent. I[tis the residum of ap enormous Jake that in very ancient times must have o¢cupied an-area of 60). square tailes, until by some great convul- sion the western maritime mountain chain was riven asunder, and the Congo began to roar through the fracture, Issuing trom Bemba Lake, the Congo is known un- der the name.of Laapula, which, after a course of nearly two hundred miles, emp. ties into Laké Mweru.a body of water, occupying an area of about one thousand eight bundred square miles. Falling from Mweru, it receives the name of Laulaba from the natives of Rua. In Northern Rua it receives an important affluent call, ed the Kamaiondo. Fiowing in a direc- tion north by west, it sweeps with a breadth of one thousand four hundred yards by Nyangwe Manyema, in latitude 26 deg. 15 min. 45 sec. south, longitude 26 deg. 5 min east, end hasan altitude of about fourteen hundred and fifty feet above the ocean. Livingstone, having lost two weeks in his dates, appears, according to Stanford’s map of 1874, to have placed Nyangwe in latitude 4 deg. 1] min. soutu, longitude 24deg. 16 min. east, but this wide difference may be due to the care lessness of the draughtsman, Those who fee] interested in it should compare it with the latest map issued by Stanford or the map published with the traveller's Jast journals. The distance the Congo his tlowed from its extreme source in Eastern Bisa to Fyangwe Manyema is about eleven hundred miles. Lake Ulenge I enquired very indastriously about, but | am unable to, confirm what Livingstone appears to have heard from Abed.binsSalem and Mo- hammed-bin.Said, his informants. Kam. slondo River, which runs through Rua to the Lualaba, isa lacustrine river, and I am told it has several small lakes in its course. Probably Ulenge may be a name given to one of these small lakes.

ITS MANY NAMES.

At Nange, Manyema, the Congo is dis tinguished by various names. The Arabs and Wanguana Call it the Ugarown, the Wagubba carriers pronounce the name Lualaba, empbasizing the second syllable. The natives of Nyangwe, also emphasizing the second syjlable, call it Lu-slawa, while the Northern Wagenys distinctly pro- nounce the name as Ru-arowa. To pre- vent confusion, however, it is best to ad« opt the spelling given by the European discoverer of the river—viz Lualaba in. clines east of north. lt meets impedi- ments High spurs from the Uregaa Hills bristle across the river and wild scenes of falls and foamy water meet the eye. Near these cataracts very 1mpracticable savages are found, who resent in a ferocious man, ner the appearance of strangers. Arabs have paid terribly for their intrusion.
