What's On at the Panther Lounge

Welcome back, folks. It’s another year of study- ing, The Barn, going to classes, The Barn, going to watch our sports teams, The Barn, hanging out in the pit, The Barn...Getting the picture yet?!

Our year officially begins Thursday, Septem- ber 9th with our first pub of the year. The Amazing Santini will be here putting a few of us intoa hypnotic trance and what will happen next is anybody's guess. (Last year, Billy Scantlebury gave birth to a chicken in front of two hundred people!)

We hope everybody left Friday afternoons open because our famous movie pubs will be returning to the barn. Our first movie pub (Sept. 10th) will feature “Alive” and “Nowhere to Run”.

Make a day of it, because Friday night Bob Lambert will be rockin’ the Barn. Bob is probably the best party around so make sure you're early for this one.

As you drive by us at the barn, we hope that you'll notice our brand new purchase sitting on our roof. The Barn is now equipped with a satellite dish. We now have access to endless movies, sports and special events (a.k.a. WWF). Watch this space as we will be putting in a listing of what’s on every week.

Everyone here at the lounge is anxious to see your smiling faces at the Barn - and don’t forget about our double-whammy Thursday and Friday night.

NOTICES

We'll dispense with the small talk. Either you're backand not happy about it or you're new here and don’t know enough to be unhappy yet. If you've been here awhile and are happy to be back then you're either an arts student or you've been here too long and killed some brain cells.

The next eight months are going to consist of long hours, late nights, and eating food with a longer half life than Uranium (when you remember to eat). Fortunately for you, we, the executive of the Biology Club, have been tire- lessly racking our brains since May trying to devise a plan of action for the coming year. We have several events planned and/or booked already including a party/camping trip planned for this weekend at Camp Riverdale--but more on that later.

What is the Biology Club? It is an organiza- tion of students run primarily to provide the rest and relaxation Biology students crave after a week of 12 hour days in class and lab. We arrange pubs and parties for members as well as providing a place to study, watch television (only two channels, bu’ ‘t still gets TinyToons), relax, or even take a nap (the lounge is in Duffy--go in the amphitheatre, walk to the top of the stairs and take the door on the left). Being an organi- zation associated with an institute of higher learning we are also able to provide students with old exams andtext books to aidin research and studying. In addition this year we plan on sending groups of students to Fredericton, N.B. and Summerside for environmental conferences.

Yes, you too can become a member of this exciting organization for only ten dollars. This money basically covers our start up for the year and enables us to throw the year’s first party. After that, fund-raising enables us to provide members with what turns out to be at least 3 times that value in complimentary drinks, munchies, and activities. Seeing as the Biology Club also has a stake in environmental concerns and many non-biology students are interested in the environment, you don’t even have to bea biology student to join. ;

For Biology students, you'll have already heard from Chris (President), Denise (Secre-

tary/Treasurer), or Scott (Vice-President) when we've visited your classes earlier this week. The rest of you can obtain a membership at the barbecue Friday afternoon in front of Duffy, at the party at Riverdale, or by contacting one of the executive at one of the numbers listed below.

BIO-DEFINITIONS

Biology: the only science that requires knowl- edge ofall the sciences such as math, chemistry, and physics (Engineering is not a science, it’s playing with Tinker toys and blocks). As well it is the only science in which the subtle art of shovelling it, otherwise known as bullshitting, can be used to some effect.

Environment: mass marketing ploy utilized by large corporations and politicians to ensure huge profits, reelection or both.

Gross anatomy: a naked engineer. DID YOU KNOW? : Canada has a worse record for protecting its forests than does Brazil. Brazil has protected 9.4% of its rainforest while Canada has pro- tected only 2.6% of its forests. Canada cuts its forests almost as fast as Brazil, which loses an acre every 9 seconds comparedto the loss of an acre of forest every 12 seconds in Canada. Canada’s forests are considered just as impor- tant as Brazil’s in regulating atmospheric tem- perature.
