ST. MDRITZ. Jan. an -(CP)' — A year-old domestic dispute be- tween rival United States hockey organizations assumed sombre in- ternational overtones tonight as cancellation of the fifth winter Olympics became a possibility only hours after their opening.

After a day of feverish political nctlvTfy and behlnd-the-scenes manoeuvring which diverted at- tention from the opening events of the first winter games since i986. the International Olympic Com- mittee ruled tonlgllt that:

1. The 36 hockey games sched- uled among nine countries shall not. be recognized as part of the Olympics. Four or the games were played today, with Canada defeat- ing Sweden 3-1 ln one of the day's surprises, but whether the hockey games would become part of a world tournament outside Olympic jurisdiction was not known im- medlately. 2. The 1.0.0. no longer will re- cognize the International Ice Hoc- key Federation as the controlling Voice in world amateur hockey.

On Wednesday afternoon and evening of this week the Summer- side Curling Club acted as host to the Allberton Club when three rinks ourneyed to Summersi-le w play s ten-end games. At the conclusion of play Summerside nail amassed a total of 261 points and Allibel-ton 286 points, which lady cates the keenlness of the competi- tion. Tilree games were won by each club but points were allowed for ends won and margin of scoie which gave Summerside the slight edge.

Both groups of hunters had to return home without their hounds. There has been no word yet as to the price Red fox pelts brought on the January sale at Montreal on the 19th. It ls felt however that the price trend Is on the up. IPoxes are very pleiltiful a this winter covering all sections of the province and it is to be hoped that the price of pelts next season will be high enough to tempt hunters and trapper: to make a concerted effort to cut down their numbers,

The past week has been a suc- cessful one in sports: the Saints won two hockey games and one basketball game. 0n Tuesday night the hockey team captured the top berth in the C.H.L., by defeating the P.W.C. Welshman

swamped Summerside 15-0 in the first game of the playoffs. On Wednesday evening the basketball team won from the Navy 58-2.} Perhaps nowhere are predictions more apt‘to go astray than ill sports; before the game wit): the Welshmen, most fans here did not give the P.W.C. team more than one chance in twenty of winning the game on Tuesday night. They did not Win. but they did suciecd in lowering the odds consider- ably; and in the first period it looked as if it might be anyone’s game. The Welshmen have a. fast, hard-skating team; they back- checked very effectively all through the game, and, had they shown more finesse inside the saints’ blueline, the score cuifd have been very different.
