"Before telling you about my trip abroad, I should like to explain to you the purpose of these "ex- change visits" and how the Air Cadets are chosen: First. Cadets are exchanged with a number of countries to serve as goodwill am- bassadors. At present. Canada is sending Cadets to the United States. the United Kingdom, Swe- den, Norway. Denmark and Hoi- land. (I may say that it was my good fortune to be selected one o'. two Canadians to visit Sweden.) An equal number of Cadets from each of these countries tour Can- ada at the same time. The Can- adian Cadeis selected for the ex- change visits are picked solely on merit and are chosen from squad- rons all over Canada. Prince Ed- ward Island is allotted ONE.

Miss Louise Roy, who has risen quickly to the top rank of Canad- ian singers. and whose rich and colourful soprano voice is lmownto many through radio, was heard last night in recital at Pginoc of Wales College. in the college con- cert series.

Miss Roy presented a varied and somewhat unusual program. Her operatic experience was suede evid- ent by the expressiveness with which she performed every number of the recital, opening with two religious compositions, the Great- ion Hymn and Song of Repentance from a group of six such songs by Beethoven.

The second group consisted of three songs by Sclruvbert, typical of the charm of that com'poser- "Du bis! die Ruh" (Thou art my Pence), ”Ftruhlingst.rau.m" tDrea.ni of Spring), and "Gretchen am spinnrad" (Gretchen at the spin- ning Wheel). Three French songs of more modern origin which were particularily enjoyed by the audi- ence were "I-'leurs Jetees" and "Les Berceaux" by I-"mire. and "Tu me dlrais" by Ohaminadc.

Miss Roy was at her best in the moving and dramatic aria "Ritorna Vincitor" from Verdi's opera Aida. In striking contrast, this was fol- lowed by a single and charming Drench song "Legend of the Little Boat.” by Missa and "Chant de la Nature." by hymn dedicated to the greatness of God-starting as the rising sun and mounting to a climax symbolic of love of God.

A group of delightful songs in English, representing four modern composers, completed the program. Heard were "Twilight Fhnoim" by Dallas. "The Tryst." a smg of a young girl's love betrayed. by Sibelius. "Lilac Tree," a short. whimsical song by Garitan, and "Love Went A-riding" by Bridge."

As encores Min Roy sang three creole songs. from a series ar- ranged by Camille Nlckermn. The first was a very lovely lullaby en- titled "Fais dodo"-n Creole version or "if you don't go to sleep the big bad wolf will come andget you." and this was followed iv a. bum- orous song "Chere mo lemme toi." The last, in contrast to these. was a. song dedicated to the great negro tenor, Roland Hayes. and Miss Roy told the audience of having had the privilege of talking to this great artist, and learning from him the correct version of the song. Called "Michleu Banjo." it describes mulatto dandy who dolls about the streets with an eye for a pretty girl.

Miss Roy was accompanied by Dr. Kelsey Jones of Saint John, conductor of the Saint John sym- phony orchestra. who is also well known here as a pianist.

News of the death of senator Charles P. Murphy of North Park. Colorado is contained in a Colo- rrado newspaper. The late Senator lMurphy's parents were born on 1 Prince Edward Island. His father rwas James Murphy, formerly from lcherry Valley and his mother, the former Agnes McCarthy was a native of Tignish.

Senator Murphy who was a ranch owner in the State of Colo- rado. ilrst entered politics in 1929 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1937 he was elected a state senator. Being a farmer. and .1 cattieman in a live- stock district, the Senator always worked for the best interests of the stockmen. He served four terms and was elected for the fifth time last year.

Senator Murphy visited the Is- land in 1948 and had the oppor- tunity of making the acquaintance of many of his relatives here.

Playgrounds Commission Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Charlottetown Playgrounds Com- mission was held last evening. President Harold MacLean report- ed very favorable reception of the newly adopted plan of playground supervision for tihe older children in the park and for the smaller children on two of the city squares and on a portion of the Prince of Wales College grounds. granted by the Provincial Government to the Commission and for which a hearty

vote of thanks was voted by the meeting. More experienced supervisors

were engaged at great expense than last season but the additional ex- penditure was fully met.

The annual evening display held in the fall by the playground children under lights in mg pa.-k, featuring singing. dancing and a baseball game, was well attended and favorably received. The com-

The general insurance firm of J A. Webster and Company which was founded in 1907 by Mr. J. A. Webster has been transfer- red to Mr. Donald K. Martin. The announcement appears elsewhere in this issue.

The new owner and manager lakes over a business that has heen established for almost half a century. Mr. Martin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. K. M. Martin, city. He attended West Kent School. Prince of Wales College and Acadia University. During the war he served with ihe Royal Navy and in post war years with the Royal Canadian Navy Rest-rvc. For two years Mr. Martin was engaged in the Insurance business in Montreal, returning home about n year ago.

World Secretary llniversiiy Service On Visit To P.E.l.

The very high prestige enjoyed by Canada in Asia at present is largely due to the important role played by this country in world affairs through the Unitedliations and the Colombo Plan. The opin- ion was expressed here yesterday by Mr. Lewis Perinbam. secretary of the World University Service.

The visitor, whose home is in Malaya in the Far East, said the Colombo Plan seeks to aid unde- veloped areas on the basis of equal partnership. He gives a great deal of credit for Canada's favorable position to the leadership provided in world affairs by Hon. Lester Pearson. whose efforts. he states. are a considerable factor in in- creasing Canada's influence.

Mr. Permbam is visiting all uni- versities across Canada to tell of the work of his organization and explain some of the needs of other

countries, especially in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. While here over the past week-end he addressed the students of St. Dun- stan's University and Prince of Wales College.

Primary purpose of his call is to seek financial aid for various Uni- versity Service projects. principal- ly student hospitals. health cen- tres, supplies of drugs and other medical equipment, scholarships for needy students, and laboratory equipment.

He mentioned that the World University Service in India has a new health centre at the Univer- sity of Delhi, as its main project, and has already raised 350,000 within India towards the cost. Canada is also taking an active interest and is supplementing the above amount with 5,000 to pro- vide equipment and furnishings.
