OTTAWA (CP)—Canada’s popu- lation has soared over the 17,000,- 000 mark and at June 1 was nearly double what, it was 38 years ago. -

Annual census estimates issued Tuesday by the bureau of statis- tics also show an increasingprop. ortion of the population in On- tario, Alberta and British Colum- bia. .

Since 1920 Ontario’s population has more than doubled. The pop-' :ulation of B.C. during that period has more than tripled and that of Alberta has nearly tripled. ’

The. annual increase of 459,000 was below the record gain of 508,000 from June 1, 1956, to June 1, 1957. - IMMIGRATION SLOWE-D Decreased immigration and an estimated rise in emigration ac- counted for the decline in the year ended last June 1. Emigration out. weighed an increase of about 24,- 000 in natural increase-‘excessof births over deaths.

But the increase between June 1, 1957. and June 1, 1958 was above the average of 414.000 for the five previous years be- tween the censuses of 1951 and 1956. Since June 1, 1956, thepr- ulation gain was just 33,000 short of 1,000,000.

Population gains were recorded by all provinces, including Sas- katchewan, which registered a de- cline of 2,000 between June 1, 1956, and June 1, 1957.

Saskatchewan’s population rose to 888,000 at June 1, up 9,0000: one'per cent in the year.

The largest numerical gain was recorded by Ontario, Its popula: tion rose 181,000 to 5,803,000 from 5,022,000, a boost of 3.2 per cent. The second biggest gain was in Quebec, where the population rose by L26,000 or 2.6 per cent, to 4,884,000, from 4,758,000. '

B.C. was third with a growth of 57,000, to 1,544,000, from 1,487,000. That was a percentage gain of 3.8 per cent, largest among the prov- inces. , '

Next was Alberta with an in- crease of 41,000 or 3.5 per cent, to 1,201,000, from 1,160,000. Al- berta was the only one of the four largest provinces to record a greater gain in the previous 12 m0nths.

Population estimates for the re- maining provinces, with last year’s figures in brackets:

, Newtoundland 488,000 (426,000);

Both the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories had gains of 1,000. The Yukon’s pop- ulation rose to 13,000 and the pop- ulation of the N.W.T. to 20,000.

Funeral Held Of Mr. C. H. Horton

Hundreds of dormer friends and acquaintances from tar and near gathered yesterday attemoon at Murray River to attend the flu- neral of the late Charles H. Hor- ton, whose death ocured last Slal- urday in Illaliilax.

The funeral was held to the Murray River Pentecostal Church where service was conducted by Rev. H.W. Trenholm, assisted by Mr. Louis Harris. Mr. Trenholm based his sermon on the text “What Is Your Life?"

Hymns sung by the choir were: “Nearer My God To Thee,” “Rock of Ages” and “Standing On The Promises.” In addition Mrs. H.W. Trenholm sang as a solo “I Won’t Have to Cross Jor- dan Alone.”

Pallbearers were Bert Mac— Leod, Basil MacLeod, William MncLeod, Clarence Lowe, Louis Herring and Byron Sharpe.

Interment was in the Murray River cemetery, with service con. ducted by Rev. Mr. Trenholm as- sisted by Mr. Harris,

TORONTO (CP) —- Max («Raw- hide) Ferguson, radio’s man of many voices, signed a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation con- tract Tuesday for a five-day weekly stint on a half-hour televi- sron program originating here. Terms were not announced. Ferguson, at a press confer- ence, said he would be acting as master of ceremonies on Tabloid, a regional television show, while keeping up his Rawhide ra- dio show. a 15-minute, five-a- week Trahs - Canada Network broadcast.

Ferguson, who leaves Friday from Montreal by boat with his wife and five children ranging in age from nine months to eight years, is off to Ireland and Eng- land for a month’s holiday. His Tabloid duties are expected to start Sept. 1 and the radioshow Oct. 1. . '
