—The papers of the mainland have commendatory biographical notices of Dr. O’Brien; and all seem to be well pleased with his appointment to the Archepiscopal See of Halifax. Dr. O’Brien, it is said, will preside over six bishops. probably three hundred priests, and not less than three hundred thousand of the laity.
—The Legislature of Manitoba has been dissolved, ard the Government have appealed to the people on the fol- lowing proposition: ‘“ We contend that Manitoba possesses and should enjoy the right to charter the construction of local lines of railway within her borders. Will the people authorize us to put that contention before the Federal authorities in their name ?”

A number of our temperance people are witating for a refreshment saloon and coffee house for the accommodation of the people, where meals will be served at all hours. Crabbe’s Hotel, with its large stables, has been chosen as the best avail- able stand. An establisement of this kind of property would no doubt he a great to our town under existing circum stances. Moncton, we see, is about to open a like establishment.
That large building on the south-east corner of Summer and Second streets, lately donated by Ronald McDonald, Esq., to the Convent de Notre Dame for school purposes, is to be disposed of by lottery, the funds to be devoted to improving and enlarging the Convent School. The object is one which deserves to be patronized. The committee, headed as it is by Father Doyle, is a sufficient guarantee that the undertaking will be squarely and judi- ciously managed.
An unprecedented oceurrence for Sum- merside took place on Tuesday morning last, when both the ‘‘St. Lawrence” and ‘* Princess of Wales” left here for Point du Chene heavily laden. The freight traftic at this end of the Island having increased to such proportions as to compel the company to place both their boats at this end in order to relieve the pressure of freight. A boat for passengers alone is very much needed, as it is decidedly disagreeable to travel on freight boats heavily loaded with live stock and ether offensive freight.
We have heard complaints from a num ber of persons in different parts of the country who have been made the victims of witat is supposed to be a portion of a well known party of thieves whose head- quarters are near Princetown. Edward McMurdo, of Wilmot Valley, was relieved of his interest in thirteen geese one night last week, and Arthur Gay of the same place, found himself short of two bushels of timothy seed on the same morning. Others in the same neighborhood lost goods of less value such as pitchforks, shovels, ete. Arthur Owens of Princetown was also visited a short timeago. There should be something done to rid the country of such upprincipled people.
On Tuesday last the handsome barque just finished by Angus McMillan, Esq,, was launched. The vessel has uot as yet been christened. Herclass is ten years A 1 at English Lloyds. The launch was witneas- ed by a large number of persons and was a complete success, notwithstanding that she refused to take to her native element the day before on account of her launchways having been prepared for some days. The model. is very fine both as regards speed and carrying capacity, and the workmanship fully equal, if not superior, to any vessel that Mr. McMillan has launched for some time. She is now being loaded at Queen's wharf, while the balance of the rigging is being put on her. Her destination when loaded will prahany be an English port.

Tue Burrell-Johnson Iron Co., says the Yarmouth Herald, have just completed the hull of a handsome little steamer for Messrs. Wm. H. Batt and Bros., of Charlottetown, P. E. I. This little craft is intended principally for towing, but has avery neat cabin fitted with open berths and staterooms, and every convenience for carrying passengers. She is 66 feet long, 14 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. and is built of oak and pitch pine, fastened throughout with galvanized irom, and is a model of beauty and strength She will be fitted with a heavy steel boiler to earry 125 pounds steam, and a compound suar- face condensing engine, calculated to give the boat a speed of fourteen miies an hour. She was commenced on the 28th of August last, and will be launched in about a fortnight.

Tue match race between ‘* Butcher Boy’ and ‘‘ Nellie’ was trotted at Upton Park’ yesterday afternoon. Four heats were con- tested, of which ‘* Nellie” was declared the winner of three and “‘ Batcher Boy” one. All heats were well contested, and the horses were said to be well matched. A correspon- dent who writes au elaborate account of the race says: ‘‘ Owing to ‘‘ Nellie” being short gaited and aunick, she had the advantage of her opponent on the turn, as he being long gaited was at considerable disadvantage in trotting through mud.” The last heat it is said was closed by a neck and neck contest, but was given to ‘‘ Nellie” because she trotted the whole course squarely. Objection was taken to by the owner of ‘‘ Butcher Boy” who warns the stakeholder not to pay over the stakes until he is satisfied that he lost the race by fair means.

What if antiquarians are able to prove that the Chinese were the earliest settlers of this continent? Thatfrom the loins of children of the flowery kingdom are de- scended the native tribes whom the white pioneers found possessing the land? This theory has been often advanced, A few weeks ago a party of miners who were running a drift in the bank of one of the creeks in the mining district of Caseair made aremarkable find. At a depth of several feet the shovel of one of the party raised about thirty of the brass coins which have passed current in China for many centuries. They were strung on what appeared to be an fron wire. This wire went to dust a few min- utes after being exposed ; but the coins appeared as bright and new as when the first left the Celestial mint. They have been brought to Victoria and submitted to the inspection of intelligent Chinamen, who unite in pronouncing them to be up- wards of 3,000 years old. They beara date about 1,200 years anterior to the birth of Christ. And now the question arises, how the coins got to the place where they were found? The miners say there was no evi- dence of the ground having been disturbed by men before their picks and shovels pene- trated it; and the fact that the coins are little worn goes to show that they were not long in circulation before being hidden or lost at Cassiar. Whether they were the property of Chinese mariners who were wrecked on the north coast about 3,000 years ago and remained to people the conti- nent, or whether the Chinese miners who went to Cassiar seven or eight years ago deposited the collection where it was found for the purpose of establishing for their nation a prior claim to the land may never be known. But the native tribes of this coast resemble the Mongolian race so closely that one would not be surprised at any time to hear of the discovery of yet more start- ling evidence of the presence of Chinese on this coast before eibieesian of the whites,
