Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine urns born in 1853 in Runcorn, on the banks of the Mersey. At a. very early age he went to live with re- latives in the Isle of Man. His boyhood in the little lvlan Island. spent in conditions of poverty. which, however, possessed nothing of a. degrading character, influ- enced considerably his imaginative character-writing in future years. Hall China's foster-parents eventu- ally sent him to Liverpool with the idea of making him an architect; instead he became connected with the once-notable Liverpool Mercury. Mere newspaper writing was so unsatisfying that Hall Cains peti- tioned for a reduction in salary s0 that he might have more time for novel writing. After six years in Liverpool the young author went to London- Here he lived with D. G. Rossetti, as a sort of secretary- companion, until the poet-paintex-‘s death.
