When Responsible Government was conceded to the Colony, it was and- died with the payment of its ‘ Civil List, but the Home Government still insisted upon the people continuing to pay a tax to the old eountry.in the shape of arm. The public servants of the British Crowu, their heirs and assigns, were still to stick like leeches on to the body politic of this loug‘suli'erlng colony. As a great ibvor, in consideration of the peculiar circum- stanccspf the colony, the Imperial Gov- ernment still continued to pay the Gover- nor's salary. That is in return for the very large soul which the“ British Govern- ment causes the Islanders annually to pay its public servants, it in return allow- ed them to receive a couple of thousand pounds annually,-a_s the salary of an olii- cer, its own appointment, sent here es- pecially to look after its interests. This small favour is new about to be with- drawn. There is no use remonstrating— very little use in complaining. The money must be granted, else a worse thing may come upon us. But as we be- fore stated, the people consider a wrong is being done them, and they submit not cheerfully indeed, but on compulsion.

Barley, nominal, 81.20. l’ork, i!oavy mess, 028.50. Butter 24 to 26 coats. l'otswes 50 cents. Eggs 32 to 24 cents.

The name given to the society ‘is “The Working Men's Union.” They meet again on Tuesday evening next. We will have more to say about this society in a future number.

It is rumored that the Hon. G. W. Howlan tendersdiiis resignation to the Government lust week in consequence of their refusal to give a grant to St. Dunstan's College. When he found the Government were determined to do without his services rather titan give the grant, he withdrew his resignation.

While passing‘ through New London on Friday evening last, we were invited to a dinner got up by a number ofycung men who had bccu attending a navigation School during the winter, under the care of Mr.John Lock. The dinner was prepared by Mrs. Woodsidc, formerly of St. Bleanor's, and reflected much credit on her. Everything was very nice, and we spent a very happy time among a good many old friends . Lads and lassics, enjoyed themselves well.

We have received Godcy's Lady‘s Book for April. When we open it first, we notice a wood cut entitled " The First Falsehood.“ Then comes a line engraving, representing children in their happy spring time “ gather- ing flowers in the meadow. " Next, a tinted picture of un “ April Fool." The fashion plates are very nice this month, nml the road- i!!g matter is excellent, as usual. We wonder how any lady can exist without. Godey.

Wt; have had a succession of thaws these last few days. The snow on the streets has nearly all disappeared, and the roads in the country are very bad. The ice is about done; it is now dangerous to truvcl on it in most places. It may hold good until after MoNcill's great sale on Saturday next.

The display of beef in the market to-day was really excellent. Messrs. Blake exhibit- ed six carcasses. which weighed 5946 pounds; Mr. Robert Bridges had four, which weighed 3315 pounds, and Mr. Conu-rford four. which weighed 3174 pounds. The supply of meat was the largest and best that Wt: lmve cvcr acct! in Charlottetown, but for quantity and quality, the three enterprising butchers we have named look the lead, though there were several others who made a creditable show. The value of Messrs. Blake's beef was about 8300—“ large sum for one market day.

The Sons and Tcmplars work in harmony— thelreuergics are not wasted with petty wit me and jealouaias—but a generous emulation has arisen, which is working moat effectually in furthering the great cause for which they were organized. They have no taverns in the immediate vicinity to contend with, and they are detemilml that they shall not hare any.
