Black Pussy walked over they crust slowly and carefuuy. He- rcached a place where tops of old weeds were above the snow. Some of those tops still had seeds in them. Now Black Pussy was iot only using his eyes, but also his nose. He smelled Mouse. Yes,

those weed tops he smelled Mouse. He knew just what it meant. Mice had been running about on the snow getting weeds from those wccd tops. He found some seeds shaken out on the crust. If Mice had been out there. they would come out again. Black Pussy tol- Iowed the Mouse smell as best he could. It led him to a certain weed top which had a large talk com- ing up through the crust. Right at that stalk was an opening in the crust and the smell of Mouse was very strong there. Black Pus- sy knew just what it meant. He knew that Mice had been using that stalk to climb out on the crust to get at the seeds.

Black Pussy crouched down on the snow just an easy jump away

from that hole. The Black Sha- dows had just begun to creep out from the Purple Hills. Black Pussy crouched down as close to the snow as he could in the midst of the Black Shadows. He looked like a Black Shadow himself, a little blacker than the others. He settled himself comfortably. He knew he might have to wait there a long time. A good hunter has patience. Black Pussy is a good hunter.

After a long time he saw that weed stalk begin to shake a llttle. He set his legs ready for a good spring. His eyes gleamed with ex- citemcnt. He was sure a Mouse was climbing that stalk.
