To Study Radio Waves From Sun And Stars At U. of T.

The antennas will be the ex- ternal section of a radio telescope for studying radio waves from the sun and stars.

The important new research Project has been initiated by the departments of astronomy and electrical engineering at the Uni- versity of Toronto. It will be financed by the National Research Council.

The project originated last fall with two young professors. Dr. Donald MacRae of astronomy and Dl".'George Sinclair of electrical engineering.

Explaining the project, the pro- fessors said radio waves are sim- ilar to light waves. but much longer. Those to be studied are Comparable in length with radar and television waves.

In some way not yet understood. the radio outbursts from the sun. and sunspots on its surface. are associated with the breakdown of 1911;! disance radio commmunica- lion. northern lights, magnetic disturb.-inces and cosmic rays. This makes the sun an important object of the research with the telescope.

I957-5!. The rise to the last peak was toward the close of the Sec- ond World War. when it was dis- covered that solar radio radiation was seriously interfering with rad. Jr. Dr. Sinclair said.

In addition to the peak of solar activity. the work will have added significance because it is expect- ed to be underway this summer, almost a year before the beginn- ing of the International Geophys- ical Year.

Dr. MacRae explained that the result will contribute to the world-wide effort to study the ter- restrial phenomena.

The telescope will look like a cluster of television antennas mounted so they can swivel to follow the sun or the stars.

Dr. Sinclair said the antennas must be highly directional, to in- crease signal strength while elim- inating locnl radio waves. Housed near the antennas will be ex eme- ly sensitive receivers and i stru- ments to record the bursts of cel- estrlal radio static.

After the solar research has been started. it is planned to ex- plore the strength of radio slg. nals from more remote objects. the radio stars. One of the bright- est of these is 600 million million million miles away at the extreme limit of the reach of the 200-inch telescope. Others may be much farther away. Larger and more complicated radio telescopes are planned for this phase of the re- search project.

A similar but more diplomatic comment came from Mrs. Andrei Gromyko, wife of the deputy for- eign minister, at a special rehear- sal Friday. She wondered whether the modes were not "a bit too slim" for the Russian woman's fig- ure.

Show organizer Mrs. Betty Mil- lan assured Mrs. Gromyko that all the dresses being shown could be adapted for "any shape. size or figure."

The audience, which included men as well as women. was greatly amused at the swaying- hipped "mannequin walk" which Russian models do not use. The British girls paraded to soft West- ern music. once considered deca- dent in Moscow.

PLEASANT SHOCK
