A friend in the country furnishes the, following extracts from letters written by a relative of his in the Far West:—-
Taylor Sration, Dawora, oil se. July 6th, 1883.
My Dfarn, Brorner,—You know | always liked scribbling; and, as I have nothing else to do this evening, 1 take my pen again to drop you a few lines, hoping they may find you and all the dear ones at home in good health. Thanks toa kind Provi- dence, I am enjoying good health ever since I came to this country. I think this is a rory healthy country, the weather now is lovely—warm and dry, rather too dry for the ‘armers—the grass on the prairie is sbort and _ crisped. Some of the farmers are pretty well down in the mouth about the dry weather. I was speaking to Mr. Webster yesterday, he says he sowed sixty bushels of oats, and it will be fit for nothing—says he intends to **picket” his horses on it: really it is too bad rain is so scare in this country; but this isa remarkably dry summer, Corn and pota- toes seem to, do well. D. J. Broce has corn planted on the sod that grew twenty- five inches in June. I guess, taking every- thing into consideration, our dear little Island is as good as any place yet. I was speaking to aman the other evening that just came down from the Northwest. He was outon the end of the C. P. about 1000 milzs from Winnipeg—he gives a hard
account. How I wish every young man on the Island could hear his story, which, no doubt, was true
-—he says they are dying out there by the dozen, with what they call ‘‘the black leg,” it is a bad kind of scurvy. They board in camps, and can get no change of food, nothing but salt meat, and the water is very bad, some of the water they are forced to use is as yellow as the yolk ef an egg. When you take sick you are put into a hospital car. The doctors never ask a patient his name—they don’t want to know. eet When he dies he is put in a rough, wooden box and thrown into a dump, and the road built over him. He says, ‘‘many a father and loving mother in the East will never know what became of their dear boys that went to the Far West.” The company don’t want the public to know what the men have to endure out there, they would’nt get men to shove the road through. Times are awfully dull in Winnipeg, everything ata stand, Those highly colored reports you hear about! those new countries are all ‘‘bosh,” take my word for it. Stick to the old farm my} dear boy, it is better for you. You might strike a good job out West, but it is getting now to be like the sick at the Pool of Bethesda—so many waiting to step in first. You can do betterin the long run on the farm; you bet I won’t railroad any longer than I can earn enough to start me ona farm on the Island.
You wanted to know what pay I am getting. Wellsome months we put in twenty. eight.or twenty-nine days,twenty-eight days is just $49.00 I can clear as much as I goton the road home. Bet your life I didn’t come out here exclusively for the benefit of my health!
The company are building a fine hotel here. I got up on the roof the other even- ing. 1 conlid see an immense lot of coun- try. I believe I could see more country, more land in a circle than there is in P. &. Island. Away to the west I could see the ‘‘bad lands of Montana;” to the east I saw ‘‘Young Man’s Bute,” and General Custer’s Lookout. The view to the south is very fine—a fine level country as far as I could see. They say it is a splendid country out towards the Hart River. I have not taken any land yet; I don’t know whether I shall. Railroad land costs about $4 per acre. You wanted to know if I took that eighty near Taylor. Well no; there was a lady jumped me. I didn’t have the money to fill on it when I came_ out. So Miss Slack had it before I had the money. So I must wait, and perhaps [ may. I am only joking, there is nobody mean enough to jump a woman’s claim in this country. It shows what pluck and courage she has, to take aclaim. She has to sleep in her little “‘Shack”* all alone out on the prairie. You bet she keeps a good revolver under her pillow. She is avery fine person. You should hear her answering Bible questions. She knows more Bible history than anyone ever 1 heard. After listening to ber I began to think I knew nothing.
July 8th—Here is another long heavy freight train coming. This makes the sixth to-day and it is only two o’clock yet. That is not bad for Sunday work.
We had quite a time here on the fourth. Nobody would work on that day. We went over the section in the morning and got our day, and as we were all dressed in our holiday costume we drove elap into Gladstone and gave the cilizens a cordial in- vitation to come down to Taylor and help us celebrate the fourth. There were quite a lot of folks around in the afternoon. We had all the inhabitants of the pretty little German Town of Richardton. It is only five miles east of us. We have Richardton on the east and Gladstone on the west—one five and the other seven miles from us. The boys enjoyed themselves immensely.
I like the place very well. 1 am pretty well off—a good place to board, a good bed all to myself, and we don’t have to work very hard. [ don’t think it will take me very long to stay five years here.
Aug. Ist—Since last writing we have had more favorable weather for the farm- ers. We had quite a lot of rainin July, just in time to save the crops from being burnt up. The prospects forthe farmers seem toloom up. Had the dry weather continued a few weeks longer, the chances are every farmer in the place would skip out this fall, but now everyone has a good opinion of the country, think it will turn

A serious accident occurred that evening a few miles west of us, caused by a washout on a dump, aheavy freight cane rattling along, the engine jumped 20ft. then rolled down the bank, the driver was instantly killed, and it is thought the fireman can’t live, the cars piled up in awful style. There was a great smasbup the other night somewhere be- tween here and Blue Grass: two freights ran into one another, and the two’ s:xty ton engines. were completely smashed to pieces, nobédy hurt, as both drivers teok to the prairie. ! suppose you read about the awful cyclones this summer, but we had nothing of the kind here. In Minnesota a passenger train was struck by a cyclone, and the coaches were lifted off the rails and blown thirty feet clear of the track, a lot of passengers Injured. The Capes Route.
There is some considerable excitement in this quarter at present abont the Cape Traverse Branch Railway, which is being pushed forward with much pregress since it has been commenced, and bids fair to be in operation this fail, It will be quite a boon to cur Island as it brings us in closer con- nection to the Provinces, which will be a greet advantage indeed. Thove is one cause, however, that will not render it so ben¢ficial as it might be, and this is our system of railways. As you know our Railway on the Island is the narrow gange, the only narrow gauge railway in the Do- minion of Canada at present, I believe. If we had a broad gauge railway thé same as our neighboring Provinces, we could ship our Island produce in loaded cars from here across to any part of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or the Dominion, without the extra work of being transferred from cars to steam boat and then from that to cars again after it has been carried across the Straits. This mode of export we have at present leaves the owner of the produce httle or nothing after being handled so many times. Now I think this might be improv- ed a. great deal if we had a good strong boat, capable of taking loaded cars abroad, ard being put across to Cape Tor- mentine, and thence to any part of the Dominion or United States.
This is¢being done on the Intercolonial Railway in the Provinces and Canada.

ow that we are having a Branch
Railway, let us make as good use of it as possible, and utilize it to the best advan- tage. Of course we have not got our Railway to suit this change, or 4 boat that will take on board loaded cais, First let us seek to have our system of Railway changed; then we will all see the benefit it will be; and I hope, at some not very dis- tant day, to see this change take place in our Railway, as it is being carried out to satisfaction in the United States and all over the Dominion. Loaded cars are put aboard of steamboats on the Canadian lakes and in many parts of the United States. If this system were adopted, what a bene- fit it wonld be to our farmers and mer- chants, and, in fine, to the whole Island? I think it is the duty of every man to try and bring about this change as soon as possible. Now that we are ro much nearer the Mainland by the branch route, we trust those who gave us this will also see fit to give us @ boat capsble «f taking our pro- duce in a different way than is in mode at present, Yours very truly, . Steamer British Empire, from Vera Cruz, arrived at New York on the 15th inst., and reports as follows: Sept. 12, E. S. E. from Frying Pan Shoals, signalled the schooner J. S. and L, C, Adams, who reported the loss of the brig Dove, of St. John’s Nfid., from Pensacola for London. All hands were saved on the 13th, and arrived off Wilmington, N. C., to-night, in the steamer City of Atlanta, leaking badly.
Steamer Delaware, from Charleston, arrived at New York on the 16th inst., and reports, 6 p. m., Sept. 14, Cape Hatteras, bearing N. by E., 18 miles distant, she passed the wreck of the three-masted schooner Charles F. Heyer, of Taunton, Capt, Watts, from Appalachicola, Aug. 17th, for New York. The schooner was waterloged and had been abandoned. This is a dangerous obstacle in the direct track of coasting steamers. oie Steamer Cyprus, spoke off Ber- muda, 35 miles distant, the British steamer Historian, Captain Hughes, from Liverpool, Aug. 19th for New Orleans, with shaft broken and making for Bermuda under canvas. The Cyprus picked up the barque Commerce and towed her to Tybee The Commerce sailed from New York, Sept. 3rd, for Vera Cruz.

The London Standard’s correspondent at Hong Kong reports that there are now seven Chinese gunboats moored alongside of the Eaglish and French men-of-war op- posite the foreign concession at Canton, Placards were posted on the walle ofCanton, on Saturday, threatening destruction to all European property if the Government de- cides that indemnity shall be paid for damage done to property of Europeans dur- ing the recent riots.
