Sin,—It appears that Messrs McDonald and Forbea, Government candidates for the Belfast District, have now assumed the duties of Road Supervisors. If they have been officially appointed by the Government to act In that capacity, we hope Mr. Peters will see their “ousted paar: properly cared for. If not ne may lose their votes. Let them be superannuated with a good annual pension. Judging by his past actlons, we feel sure that his magnanimous heart will not scruple at a few thousand dollars at such acritical time as this—especially when the public treasury is at his elbow. “What if he’ll drain it?” Tut! He can issue more debentures when returned to

wer. In all the “doubtful sections” of the Belfast District, roadmaking is the order of the day. The writer, while recently passing through certain portions of it, seeing crowds of laborers with a large anmber of horses busily engaged on the public highway, concluded that the “Great Frederick” had at jast reached the climax of his political glorv, and had undertaken to construct the long-talked-of Belfast and Murray Harbor Railway; but on making particular enquiries found that they were only repairing the roads on a “large scale.” hey said: “The Government candidates told ua to get to work and send in our bills to the Govern- ment irrespective of local supervisors, and Mr. Peters would see every cent of it paid whatever the amount might be.” Whoever heard of such bar: faced corru,- tion and deliberate waste of public money ! If Mesers. McDonald and Forbes intend to adopt a syaem of bribery we would re- spectfully request them to use their own private purses and keep their hands out of the public treasury! Let them beware! The intelligent taxpayers of the Province will not tamely submit to such gross in- justice.

It would have been quite proper for them to have instructed the Supervis- ors to attend to all needed repairs on the roade, But we maintain that to have miles of the public highway ploughed up and rounded at this lute season of the year is not only an unpardonable waste of money, but a great injury to the travelling public. When the fall rains and early frosts set in, these newly made roads will become so soft as to render them almost impaseable. Now, then, if these gentlemen wish to qualify or legalize their bribery, for mercy sake let them try todo so ina manner that will not cause so much pub- lic loss and ineonvenience.

Someone aske, “Why don’t King’s Co. get a share ef the boodle 7” The answer is obvious. Mr, Peters thinks that the “gerrymander” has made it safe for them there. With all respect to the Premier’s opinions and insight into the future, we feel confident that he is mistaken. In spite of unjust legislation and other evil influences now at work, King’s Co. will triumphantly carry the Liberal-Conserva- tive banner to victory without a stain. We are strongly inclined to think that McD. & F. have been inspired on this occasion by their “beloved Leader,” who has proved himself to be one of the ablest political in- triguers of modern times. Still he is not infallible. They will find that their great l berality about the ple’s money will do them more harm than good.

Every intelligent elector in this Proy- ince—grit or tory—even the very men who got a share of the boodle, will utter- ly despise the men who try to force their way into our legislative halls over the fin- ancial ruin of their native country.

Sir,—The grit candidate for Belfast, at Vernon River Bridge is trying to gain some ‘mportance in the eyes of some, and some cheap sympathy from others, by reporting that he is accused of turning Catholic. He blames one of his opponents for it. As he bas not the shadow of a foundation for his story, it would be interesting to know his object in spreading the report. He seeme to be hard up for canvass, At the last election this grit candidate zeal- ously canvassed his opponent’s friends, saying it did not matter te him (his oppon- ent) whether or not he was returned, as he was aure, in such case, to fall back on his seat in the Legislative Council, which he had resigned. fn this campaign he sedu- lously spread the report that his opponent was not to run at all; and now, when he is short of canvass again, he pretends to say he is accused of turning Catholic. What next?

FRANCE AND RUSSIA.

Democratic. France and autocratic Russia have been fraternizing at Toulon. The reception of the Russian fleet was a “ great success,” Despatches of Tuesday’s date state :—

“Few persons slept in Toulon last night. The atreets were almost as crowded at 3 o’clock this morning as at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The illumination cf shops and private housas did not cease until day-break and the thousands sang ard caroused under the electric light with- out a sign of weariness. When the officers’ ball at the arsenal cloeed shortly after six o’clock the dancers came out upon a scene of delirious enthusiasm. Bands playing the Russian anthem and the Marsellaise were parading the streets. The throng was alternately singing, cheer- ing and shouting for Rusria; the Russian officera and the Czar rang from every side. At 8 o'clock the crush was worse than since the celebration began. Everybody was shout.ng, “Long Live Russia,” “Long live the Czar.” Mayor Ferraro gave his luncheon in the name of the muncipality at 11 o'clock. After the luncheon he presented a gold champagne cup to Ad- mira! Avelan and a silver cham e cup to every other Russian officer. The pre- sentation speeches were effusive, but they evoked no corresponding responze from the Russians. Until evening the demon- stration was remarkable for the absence of drunken men. After dark, however; wine was given out in enormous quantities. Staggering sailors were to be seen every- where, and the popular manifestations of enthusiasin degenerated in maudlin em- braces and drunken howling.”

Czar and President, serf and citizen, seem to he in the same boat. The suspicions of the enemies of France and Russia will probably be increased as a result of the demonstration.

SAW A GHOST AT SEA.

Sailors are great for seeing ghosis. Whether Jack has keener vision than landiubbers, whether the spirit frater- nity have a predilection for the sea, or whether these seafaring waifs were buried in mid-ocean, and find it impos- sible to rest sasy, are questions hard to answer. But certainly more of them are heard of at sea than at Jand. This story was told a reporter for The San Fran- cisco Call by a retired sea captain, now manager of a hotel at one of the famous

American, intelligent, weli read, a man of strong sense, who has shown himself singularly free from the usual sort of superstitious feeling. Yet this experi- ence drove him t abandon the sea. It happened a goo! many years ago, when he was in command of a sailing vessel wn the Pacific. They were returning to San Francisco from Sydney with several ee aboard. One of these was a San Francisco broker, who had some love trouble and had been drinking very heavily, and threatening suicide ever since the ship left Sydney. Because he was drinking no one paid any particular attention to these threats.

“One night,” exid the captain, telling the story, “I was on deck when I saw this man come up tie companion and walk aft. He came forward ina minute or two, then walked aft again and did not return. I thought no more about it and a little whi-e after turned in. Next day this passenger was not to be found. The ship was thoroughly searched half a dozen times, but he was evidently not on board. We c.ncluded that he had ore or fallen overboard and felt very

ly that no attention had been paid to his threats. Weil, a month went by, and itcame arounda clear moonlight night, I was again on deck, about amid- ships, when I saw tiis same man come up the companion, walk aft, then for- ward, and then go aft again and not return. As soon as I could move I rush- ed aft and spoke to the man at the wheel. He seemed dazed. ‘Did you see a man come aft? Thesailor nodded without speaking. ‘Who was it?” I demanded. Then, with an effort, the man found his voice and declared it to be M., the passenger who had so mysteriously dis- appeared. I was badly shaken up, but had ail hands called and the ship again searched, but with no result, thorough hunt next morning gave no better result, but the next night I again saw my lost passenger come up the companion, walk aft and return, then go aft and disappear. Again the man atthe wheel saw him, and again a search of the ship was bar- ren of result. It began to get around among the crew, and we were all ina quandry over the mystery. The next night he did not appear. It was very dark and cloudy, as it continued to be for several nights. At last, however, one night he again came up the compan- ion, walked aft and returned, As he was ain going aft I started after him, when he instantly disappeared. Great- ly bewildered, I turned hastily around, andthe next minute caught sight of him again walking aft. I ran after him eet » him, iy he disappeared in, and as I sto saw him some Setanee ahead, Pe iking aft, then he disappeared entirely. LIcouldn’t stand it—t apparition, whatever it was, made one or two appearances after that, but there was no attempt te catch it, and when I] reached San Francisco I quit the sea, and never made another voyage until, asa passenger, I left the country to come here.”

The Printer,

A printer is a most curious being. He may have a “bank” and “coins” and not be worth a penny; may handle & 1,” “diamond” and ‘‘ruby” and know nothing of precious stones. Others may run fast, but he gets along swifter by “setting” fast. He may be making “impressions” without eloquence; may use the “‘lye” without offending, and be telling the truth; while others cannot + " while they “set,” he can ‘‘set standing,” and do both at the same time; has to use ‘‘furniture,” and yet have no dwelling; may spread ‘“‘sheets” without being a housewife; may lay his “form” on a ‘‘bed,” and yet be obliged to sleep on thefloor. He may make and put away ‘“‘pye,” and never see a pie, much less cat it, during his whole life; be a human being and a “rat” at the same time; may “press” a deal, and not ask a favor; ee, handle a ‘‘shooting-iron,” and know nothing abouta cannon, gun or pistol ; may use the “dagger” without shedding blood,and from the earth he may handle “stars.” Hemay be ofa “rolling” dis- a and yet never desire to travel ;
