Protest inaction In Trying To Settle Textiles Strike

MONTREAL, July 3 (CP)-—A mass demonstration against “the inactivity" of the Provincial De- partment of Labor in settling the Dominion Textile Company strike was scheduled to be held in front of the Department's office on East End Notre Dame Street today, it was decided at a meeting of the striking workmen last night. Leaders of the United Textile Workers of America (A.F.L.) ad- dressed the meeting and reported on the general strike situation a; it affects company employees hey-g and at Valleyfield, Que. it was also decided that a conference of the combined committees of Mon- treal and Valleyfield would be held today to determine the next move to be taken by the striking employees.

One striking worker was ar- rested here by police on a charge of disturbing the peace and will appear in Recorders Court tomor- row.

The strike, called by the union to attain union recognition, a 40- hour work week and a 25-cents per hour increase, has been ir progress for 32 days and has 6,000 workers of three Montreal plants Hochelaga, Merchants and Mount Royal, and the Valleyfield mill out on strike.

Mr. St. Laurent spoke on second reading of a measure amending the combines investigation act and said it would, by tightening the controls on monopolistic trade practices and price fixing exercise an efficient guard against domistic cartels.

But Canada could not, he added, take action against a company or group beyong its confines. This depended on international action and he hoped the United Nations Organization would take action to prevent international cartel oper- ations and bring prices of goods down to where only a reasonable profit margin was allowed.
