Protecting Fruit Trees From Mice

Each year hundreds of young

fruit trees in Prince Edward Island aze injured by mice. Much of this injury can be avoided preautionary measures costly nor troublesome are adopted. Trees growing 1n sod are more likely to be attacked than are trees under cfesn cultivation. One danger from mice is to place coal ashes on the ground around the trunks o1’ the trees. If sufficiently deep. the ashes will prevent the grass frnnf grcwlng up, thus providing an area in which the mice are not as likely to work. Th‘s method is not suffic- ient to insure compietc immunity and for this reason the trees should be given additional protection where possible. Wire guards cf line mesh, eighteen ‘nches wide and of about equal height, give the most complete control. These can re- main in position for e. nllmbel‘ of years or until the trees are suffici- ently ‘arge to do without protect- ion.
