a police state mentality. Professors have faith in the honesty of their students, but should have safeguards against the minority of dishonest students who exist, and some do exist. A recent survey of UPEI students showed that, out of about one class worth of individuals, 48% did admit to cheating. 8% admitted plagiarizing, and 68% said they knew people who did cheat. You'll notice that cheaters and plagiarists are a minority, but there is definitely the belief that dishonesty exists, and some admission of it. It’s reasonable, then, to take some precautions to prevent dishonest conduct. After all, it is hardly fair to students who work hard for their marks if cheaters can achieve benefits by dishonesty, and it can be discouraging to honest students to see cheaters prosper. While professors should trust their students they should also take measures to prevent dishonesty as well. In the end, to allow plagiarism or cheating is to unpunished is against the whole point of university. Students are here to learn and to express their own ideas on what they have learned, form their own works and skills and theories based on the knowledge they gain. The futility of cheating was expressed recently by President Elliot, who said the following: "We should make it clear we’re interested in finding out what you think, and you destroy that possibility by copying or stealing from another source. You destroy the object of attending University."

Good advice. Nothing good comes of cheating, and true achievement comes from

honest effort. Professors should encourage this, and take precautions to avoid dishonest efforts as well.
