The Federated Malay States suf- fered severely during the depression, as the price of the staple products, tin and rubber, fell to a very low level. The price of tin is now much better, and it has a larger quota. The price of rubber is also much im- proved, and production has been re- strictcd.

—FORMER ISLANDER SETS NEW RECORD-Mr. Wm. N. Mac- Lean of Arlington, Mass, but for- merly of Lot i6, P. E. I. received the congratulations recently of railway officials in Boston, when he set a new record for the Boston to Plymouth run on the Boston and Maine line. by a non stop run ‘of two hours and 38 minutes. It mark- ed the first time that a train had ever ran the 125 miles from Boston to Piymouth without a slop for water, and in addition, MacLean. with Fireman Arthur Willet hand- ling the coal scoop clipped nearly three-quarters of an hour off the usual express train speed for the run. In the early morning hours of July 2i, i934, Mrs. J. Wendall Mac- Millan, (Mabel Livinia Richards), of West Covehead, departed this life in the P. E. I. Hospital, aged 47 years. Seldom has this community been so shocked and grieved, as when word come of this sudden death. Though Mrs. MacMlllun had been ailing for a year or more, few were aware of it as she was a very active woman and always cheerful and gave little indication of illness. The necessity of a ser- ious operation was itself a surprise, and her failure to rally with every possible attention and skill was a shock to us all, and to her sorrow- lrlg family a terrible grief and loss.

Charlottetown has lost by death one of her prominent business men in the person of John Stainforth Morris, aged 68 years, which occur- red yesterday

Mr. Morris had been in failing health for about two years. In June. 1933, he underwent an oper- ation in the Royal Victoria Hospit- al, Montreal. This brought about an improvement for a time, but inter his condition became worse and he gradually grew weaker until he passed away this morning

He was the son of the late 111cm- as Morris. one of our leading citi- zens. who had been a member of the City Council and had also been a candidate for the Provincial Leg- lrlature. _

He had been head of the firm of J. d: T. Mcrris, wholesale com- mission house, established in i856.

The late John S. Morris was also a member of the same firm and in i910 he become President of the J. 8h T. Morris Company. manufac- turers of Peerless Ginzer Ale and other vl'e'l known beverages.

Mr. Morris possessed exceptional business ability and sound judg- ment. Though apparently reserved in manner. he was really one of the most companionable of men and possessed those sterling qualities which won for him many warm and true friends.

He leaves to mourn a widow, nee Herberta Jenkins, dnuhtrer of the

Cook. the veteran photo- g-rapher, dean of his profession in Prince Edward Island, if not in the Maritime Provinces, and a well known and highly respected citi- zen. He was in his 85th year hav- ing been born on June 24. i850. He was the son of Thomas and Eliza- beth Cook. of Devonslure, England, who carried on farming in Char- lottetown Royalty on the land, which subsequently became Sher-, wood Cemetery. After disposing of their property the family removed to Charlottetown where Mr G. H. Cook was born.

The latter entered the employ of the late Cyrus Lewis, photographer and in 1870 bought out the business. Since then for sixty four years has been carrying it on, assisted in re- cent years by his son, William C. Cook

The late Mr. Cook was highly skilled in the art of photography to which he gave his most consci- entious attention.

He was a man of splendid char- acter. quiet and reserved in man- ner, of l. most kindly and sympa- thetic nature, devoted to his work and to his honle and family.

With the objective of improving hospital standards and efficiency of service by discussion of problems and sharing of experiences, the sixth annual meeting of Nova Sco- tla,-Prince Edward Island Hospital Association began its sessions yes- terday in the Board Room of the City Hall. Sessions were held in the morning, ill the afternoon and in the evening. Among those who gave addresses were Rev. H. G. Wright, President, who occupied the chair, Mr. G. Harvey Agnew. Secretary of the Canadian Medical Council. Di‘. H. G. Grant, Dean of Dalhousle Medical School, Mr. L. D. Currie, Glace Bay, and Premier MacMillan. The addresses and dis- cussions which were of an extreme- ‘Jy practical nature were followed with keen interest by delegates from twenty-two hospitals in the two provinces.

PAINFUL INJURY - While em- ployed at the pile driver at. the Marine Wharf about 11.45 yesterday morning Mr. Philip McGee was struck in the face by a lead block and knocked unconscious. A doctor was hastily summoned and the vic- tim rushed to the City Hospital where his injuries were not found to be of a serious nature. After re- ceiving treatment he was driven to his home.

FUNERAL SERVICES-The fun- eral of the late Mrs. John Quinn was held yesterday morning from the residence of her son. Francis -Quinn, to St. Dunstans Basilica, where Requiem High Mass was sung by Rev. E. Dalton. The pail bearers were: L. B. McMillan, J. P. Duffy, Lawrence Collins, George Prowse, William Clarkin, J. B. Flemming. Services at the grave were conducted by Rev. P. McMahon, D.D.

| LAID TO REST-—The funeral of lthe late John S. Morris was held yesterday morning from St. Peter's Cathedral when the services were conducted by Rev. Canon Malone, assisted by Rev. Dr. Hunt. The pallbearers were Lt-Gov. Geo. D- DeBlois, Messrs. A. W. Hyndman, R. L. Cotton, E. Peake, Robt. Shaw, E. A. Foster, Interment was in Sherwood Cemetery, Rev. Canon Malone officiating at the grave.

IIOWATT-IRVING-On Saturday morning last at the residence of the officiating minister, Rev. Dr. J. W. S. Lowry, 20 Greenough Avenue, Cam- bridge, Mass, there was performed the marriage of Miss Pearl C. How- att, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rob- ert I-lowatt of Summer-side, P. E. 1., to George Douglas Irving of Cam- bridge. The bride was handsomely attired in a dress of blue silk crepe while the groom wore the conven- tional black. They were unattended, the ceremony being witnessed by on- ly a few friends of the bride. The young couple have been residents of Cambridge district for some years past and have the best wishes and congratulations of a wide circle of friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Irving will leave in a few weeks time to make their future home in their native province of P. E. Island.

Shea, chief of the In- vestigation Department, Canadian National Railways, Montreal, im- parted to the people of the Mari- time Provinces the appointment of Mr. John J. Dunphy as superin- tendent of the Investigation De- partment embracing the territory within the Atlantic Region. He succeeds Major A. J. Tingley, who has retired after a long period of years in administering the policies of this department.

—SAD BEREAVEMENT - Much sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Gallant in the death on Monday of their little son, Joseph, aged three and a half years. The little one had been eating green ap- ples which upset the little fellow, causing e. severe form of stomach flu, which proved fatal. The little one was laid to rest on Tuesday in the R. C. Cemetery, following ser- vice in St. Paul's Church-S.

COUNTY COURT—'I'hc case 0f J. A. Farquharson vs. Benjamin Rog- ers, Sr., was heard and disposed of on Wednesday, Judge Duffy presid- ing. The action was brought by the plaintiff to recover monies alleged to have been received by the de- fendant. The defence was that the money sued for had already been paid to the plaintiff. At conclusion of plaintiff's case, counsel for the defendant moved for a non-suit. Af- ter the defendants evidence was heard, the Judge allowed the nio- tion of the defendant, nonsuiting the plaintiff with costs. Mr. J. A. Bentley represented the plaintiﬂ and. Mr. R. R. Bell the defendant.

Many friends in the city and throughout the province will learn with regret of the death 0f Mr. S. Albert MacDonald, President and Manager of the MacDonald-Rowe Woodworking Co., which occurred at his home yesterday morning after a lingering illness, aged 72 years.

A widow (nee Mary White) is left to mourn a kind and loving hus- band. A son, Gordon, was killed overseas while serving in the Great War as an aviator.
