The Prench had agreed to stop bombing rebel-held parts of the highway while they airlifted their wounded from Dien Bien Phu. But Monday the French forces radio announced the evacuation agree- ment had been ended. giving the bombers full freedom of action.

The French decision follows vain demands that the rebels speed up repairs to the shell-pocked fortress airstrip.

The rebels are understood to have refused French offers of help.

During that time, the French fear, the Communists would use the highway to poise their forces for a crushing blow at the rice- rich Red River delta. key to north- ern Indo-China.

However, the French are willing to let the rebels use the highway io evacuate wounded from Dieii Bien Phu at pre-arranged times.

Mother Sees Son Killed By Car

BA'I‘l-IURST. N. 3.. (CP)-—While his mother watched in horror, a five-year-old boy was killed by it car about 22 miles from here Mon- day.

Mr. Gardiner made this statement at the Alber- marle potato festival at Elizabeth City. North Carolina.

In his address at the festlval.Mr. Gardiner re-affairmed Canada's potato trading policy as stated in the House of Commons by him earlier this month. Regarding sales of potatoes by Canada to the United States and the United States to Canada the Minister said:

“It has been found good practice to secure seed potatoes produced in the north for planting in the south. Out of that practice has grown the fact that you here re- ceived most of your seed potatoes from Prince Edward Island or New Brunswick. We in turn, pur- chase most of our new potatoes for early table use in these more southern areas. Throughout the past three years. we have purch- ased about the same quantity of table potatoes in the United States as we have sold to your country. We do. however. sell you considerable quantities of seed po- tatoes and buy very little from you."

Mr. Gardiner drew on his own travel experiences when lauding the potato as the most useful plant to meet food shortages. Tell- ing of his European travels. he said:
