ELOQUENT TRIBUTE PAID TO I-IEI. MEMORY BY REV. B. C. EATON.

Many will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Bruce Stewart which occurred at her home, Water street, on the afternoon oi Friday the 3rd inst. She had been in declining health for the past three months and notwithstanding all that medic- al skill and loving care could ac- complish it was evident that the in- evitable was approaching.

The late Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of the late Mr. William Carter of Charlottetown and her maiden name was Annie Carter. Although of quiet disposition she enjoyed a large circle of friends who will be shocked to learn of her pas- sing. She was a very estimable wo- man. a member of the Baptist Church and one who took a con- siderable interest in all that was for the bettennent of the community. She was much respected by all who knew her and affectionately re- garded by her more intimate as- sociates.

Besides a bereaved husband there are left to mourn two daughters,

Today we add another name to the long list of our highly respec d and loved friends who have he rd the call of God and have gone to theireternal reward. Today again we come to pay our last respegts and bring our silent tributes of love and to impart if possible some little measure of sympathy to those who are most sorely bereaved.

Again we are confronted with the mysteries of life, the mystery of suf- fering alid death. The ﬁnal solu- tion of them lies in the mind of the Great Inﬁnite and Eternal One. To- day while we wonder and ponder we know that we must accept in faith and trust the Flitherly Love of God.

"In Romans 8:18 the Apostle of God says: “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present world are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us ward." He recognizes as we all must that we live in an imperfect, strug- gling and suffering world with pain and sickness about us on evcry hand. There is no home, no life that is free from it. It seems to be part of God's great plan for us whose reason it is true is not. always plain. All nature seems to share in the groaning and suffering. And as-lwe think of our beloved dead today we are reminded that she was a suffer- er and was laid aside for many long months on her bed of sickness.

This leads us to our second thought that there is a glory some- times which we see even through our suffering and tears that does not come in our moments of hap- piness and Joy. Some of the ﬁnest

tlon. This often is the discipline of life which God sends to develop wi- thin us the ﬁnest and noblest virt- ues of life. Suchi may it have been with her as we think of her long weeks of patient suffering without; murmur of complaint in these days preceding her l ‘ e.

And then there comes the thought that beyond the suffering and sick- ness and weakness of our earthly days there is the ialr morning of

Interesting Address On Seed Potato Movement

ing address dealing with the export of seed potatoes from this province through his firm.

I-Ie explained that steamers were

used for the handling of potatoes because ail-land hauls to southern points is prohibited on account of the heavy expense. Even with

steamers the cost of handling is

considerable. Most of the potatUes which go to the southern states are stored at Norfolk, the centre of the potato industry in the south.

\Mr. Thompson paid a high trib- ute to the work of Inspector Pep- pln and his staff and to the en- ergetic and intelligent service of Mr. Boulter, a. man to whom most of the credit is due.

He also spoke of the eﬂleclent manner in which the steamcrswere stevedored.

Mr. Boulter who was chairman of yesterday's meeting said that it was fortunate for the Prince Ed- ward Island Potato Growers’ Asso- cfatlon that their potatoes are be- ing handled by the Southgate Pro- duce Company, a very strong organ- lzatlon ﬁnancially. It has ﬁnanced some dealers to the extent of one hundred thousand dollars.

The guests present were Mr. C. P. Woolner of Everett. Mass, and H. R. Cross of Montreal.

You are as familiar as I am. as to the planting. spraying, inspec- tion. digging and grading, which is the work of the producer or fann- er. Then comes the loading of the cars, ordinary box cars in the early part of the season, and when cold weather approaches the use of pro- tectod or refrigerator cars. This is the work of our efficient local rall- way officials as well as the as- sembling of stock at the ports of Charlottetown, Georgetown and Summerside. It is from this point on that I propose to deal with briefly today. The steamers which carry our seed away are, as a gen- eral rule, chartered months in ad- vance of the actual movement. The tonnage market is closely watched and just as one tries to buy any commodity at the lowest point of the market, so do we endeavor to contract our tonnage requirements accordingly. Sometimes we hit. it. sometimes we miss it. Any type of ship will not suit and in an earnest endeavor ‘to get the ~seed to the consumer in the best possible coli- dltion ships fitted with tween decks are used whenever possible. Steamers employed in the fruit carrying business are a very de- slrable type as they are equipped with a refrigerator system and ex- ceptionally well ventilated. It is very important to have well ven- tilated boats for as the steamer leaves our Island ports and reaches warm water or the Gulf Stream. cold air can oe forced through the cargo, and thereby keep the pot- atoes at a desirable temperature. Other essentials -t._o look for in ships are their loading facilities. You are all familiar, no doubt with the methods employed in loading a ship and the great care taken to avoid bruising. etc.— how our fann- ers help us by using abundance of straw on the bottom cf the cars. how our friend Rotarlan Hedley Buntairi, who is agent for all our boats, sees that the trucks the long- shoremen use are properly padded and that there is always sufficient dunnage on hand to be used in the hold of the steamer to enable the stcvcdorcs to stow the cargoes properly and avoid coming in dir- eet contact with the steel walls of the ship. And right here, Mr. Chair- man, I would like to be permitted to pay my tribute to the very ei- ficlent and careful way in which the longshoremen of Charlotte- town, SIIIIIIIIGTSICIC and George-town have always handled potatoes mov- ing by waver, and particularly to the boss stevedore, Mr. Wallace McDonald, who always takes such a great pride in his work. From the other- end oi the line we receive very favourable comments on the efficient way all Prince Edward Island cargoes are stevedored.

Someone might reasonably ask. why do you use steamers for this movement-why not employ curs all the way. March and April are placed in refrigerator warehouses where they are held lit 36 degrees temperature to delay germination. Those which ale to be planted in January are stored in nonrefrigerator warehouses. However, potatoes so stored must be handled with great care. and only lifter five years of experi- menting have we perfected what we regard as a satisfactory and de- pendable method of storage.

The potatoes are piled on 4 x 4 dunnage, 4 sacks high, with at least two feet of air space be- tween each row. Each warehouse will accomodate about 10,000 sacks. The warehouses are made practic- ally air tight and are darkened by nailing black building paper over the windows. The doors are open- ed at night, thus giving the pol.- atoes the benefit of the colder night temperature. At clay break. the doors are closed. The result is that the interior temperature is held at. a lower degree during the day then the exterior temperature. The importance of this will be rec- ognized when you realize that lli the Southern States the midday temperature often reaches 65 de- grees. The problem of non-refrig- erated storage is, therefore, one oi holding back germination rather then of protecting the potatoes against freezing, and it is rarely ever neccsary to use heat.

Most of the potatoes are stored in Norfolk, this being the center of the potato industry in the South. At Charleston, S. C.. and Savannah. Co., on account of inadequate cold storage facilities, and inability to carry the potatoes satisfactorily in non-refrigerated warehouses, due to relatively high temperatures, the growers insist upon arrival being delayed until the middle or latter part of January.

It can therefore be readily seen the great need of having a late shipping port such as Georgetown to take care of business in the far South and cs this business develops the absolute need of further devel- opment at Sourls, due to the fact that this port is open as late as Georgetown and we all hope that by the chipping season of 1928 this will have been provided. At plant- ing time our shipping force is taxed to the utmost in making deliveries. Shipments are made in lots of 5 sacks and upward. A dealer at an interior point who has purchased 1,000 sacks willgive us instructions to ship the potatoes direct to his customers. It is not uncommon to split. the 1.000 sacks into 100 iridi- vidual deliveries or shipments, some going by rail, some by boat and oth- ers by motor truck. The distribu- tion is spread over a great many states and last season included the following: Maryland. Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carol- ina. South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama. Florida, and Louisiana.

It would make this paper far too long were I to explain in detail the farming methods employed and the conditions under which the southern farmer markets his cron. which as you all know is different‘ to ours. Very briefly, barrels are used exclusively with a cloth cover or top and all the stock is graded. The farmer of the South is af- forded a wonderful train service for the movement of his crop and thus gets it to the consuming mark- efs with the least possible delay. The Southern farmer is not in a position to hold his stock the same as the farmer of the North, and once he makes up his mind to dig. he practically has to sell at the same time. due to climatic condi- tions. As you know. the labor em- ployed is colored and the animals used are mules. It. is a rare excep- tion to see horses or tractors or diggers employed. All the potatoes

soundness of this policy and the company's decision to concentrate on the sale and distribution of the Island product is strikingly illum- trated by the fact that since 1022 it has increased its yearly certi- fied seed business from about 25.- 000 sacks to over 200,000 sacks. Each year has witnessed a sub- stantlal increase in volume over the preceeding year and the man- agement feels it is not extravagant to say that barring unforseen dif- ficulties. such as lowering of the present high standard of quality or an unsurmountable tariff bar- rier, the volume will continue to in- crease. .

It. was afortunate circumstance that brought the P. E. I. Potato Growers Association and the South- gato Produce Co. together in 1022. The former was in a position of needing an aggressive organization to find markets for its rapidly in- creasing production. The latter, through its associate companies, had terminal facilities. and steam- ship connections oi long standinz. ample financial resources to under- take the business in a large way and was recognized as an organisa- tion with contacts in all of the consuming markets in the Southern States. It. was, therefore, a. com‘- paratlvely easy matter for such an organization to secure an immedi- ate, wide distribution of P. E. I. potatoes.

You can readily sec as stated above, that so long as we main- tain our high standard which in a large measure is clue to the effici- ent work of Mr. Peppin, chief in- spector for this province and his staff, and the Tariff which we flow have to face is decreased. there is a splendid future in sight. But let me emphasize again-everything depends on quality. By keeping. the quality up I feel that the Ameri- can farmer will continue to want P. E. I. certified seed for founda- tion stock. I could not very well close without pointing out the phenomenal growth and develop- ment which the potato business. particularly seed has had in this and I might ask what is the ex- planation of this phenomenal de- velopment? Superior Soil and Climatic Conditions. Yes. More painstaking care in cultivation. elimination of disease and grad- lng? Yes. But surely, you will ask, this could not have happened of its own accord and without meone putting into the business a tremen- dous amount of energy and intelli- gent thought-who is responsible for this wonderful accomplishment?
