Sir,—Referring to a letter in this morn- ing’s Guardian, signed L. W. Lehrle, we wish to say that the Anglo-American Cable Co. may be a monopoly, and the conditions of their message blanks may be objectionable, but in actual practice their service is first-class.
We speak only from our own experience. We have sent and received ceveral hun dreds of messages yearly for some years past, involving purchases of hundre’s and cften thousands of doliars at a t'me, in fact the bulk of our purchases are made that way, and we are not aware of ever yet having any cause for dissatisfaction in the service of this company.
However it may be with the company or its monopoly we are sure that the re- flections on the staff of officials of the A. A. C. are uncalled for. Employes or officials must follow instructions, be they teleyrap' operators or commercial travel— lers, and to cast blame on faithful and competent officials for refusing to change
| the forms farnished by the company is as | unfair as it is unjust.
The people of this province have some grievances, and when some of the large provinces show a dis position to do as justice they will be rem- edied. The telegraph service is not our worst grievance. We have no concern in this matter, only in the interests of fair- play, and because of the high opinion we bave of Mr. James aud his competent staff.

REV. MR. CAMPBELLS SERMON,
Sir.—lIt is about time that some of our clergy made a start in the line of “bomb- shell sermons,” and it is to be hoped that Mr. Campbell’s “brethren ir the work” will follow in line. With all due respect to our clergy, the fact is we hear altogether too much theology and ccience expounded from the pulpits, which not more than three out of fifty can understand. The majority of church-goere need instruction and encouragenent which will help them
| to battle with the duties and temptations
of every-day life, with an “eye opener” now and again. “F. P. T.” puts the finishing touch on the Christians when he calls them “polite and varnished.” Of course this description does not incluce all. Far from it. It simply means those who .go to Church, apparently as Christians, heavily draped and overloaded with the latest fashions in dress and modern rules of etiquette. Andif such beings are not a hindrance to the carrying out of the sim- ple and humble teachings of “Our Sav-

Preparations for the lobster fi-hing are going on briskly at the three factories here. The fishermen anticipate an early season, having had their fishing gear set about three weeks ago, the earliest éver known on P. E. Island.

Mr. George McDonald netted at East Lake one night last week one hundred and ninety trout. They were the finest lot of trout ever caught in @ single net. They averaged from two to five pounds each.
Mr, Patrick Whittey has returnei from the Northwest, after an absence of several years. Mr. Whittey speaks well of the Northwest, and intends returning in June next.
Messrs, Allan H. HeDonald and Patrick Cheverie will be ready ina few days to start to the Magdalen Isands to engage in the lobster business there.
