A Chapter of Stings.

The pain caused by the sting ofa plant or insect is the result of a certain amount ofacid poison injected into the blood. ‘The first thing to be done is to press the tube ofa small key firmly on the wound, moving the key from side to side to facilitate the ex- pulsion of the sting and its accom- panying poison. The sting, if left in the wound, should be carefully extracted, otherwise it greatly increases the irritation. The poison of stings being acid, common sense points to the alkalies as the proper means of cure.

Among the most easily procured remedies may be mentioned soft soap, liquor of ammonia (spirits of harts® horn), smelling salts, washing soda, quick lime made into paste with water, lime water, the juice of an _ onion, tobacco juice, chewed tobacco, bruised dock leaves, tomato juice, wood ashes, tobacco ash and carbonate of soda. If the sting be severe rest and coolness should be added to the other remedies, more especially in the case of nervous subjects. Nothing is so apt to make the poison active as heat, and nothing tavors its activity less than cold. Let the body be kept cool and at rest and the activity of the poison will be re- duced toa minimum, Any active ex- ertion whereby the circulation is quickened will increase both pain and swelling. If the swelling be severe the part may be rubbed with sveet oil ora drop of laudanum. Stings in the eye, ear, mouth or throat sometimes lead to serious consequences; in such cases medical advice should always be sought for as soon as possible. —. Y, Graphic.

Houses Twelve Stories Wigh.

In the West End of London, in a neighborhood known as St. Ann’s Gate, a banker named Hankey has built some enormous “mansions” overlooking St: James Park, and not far from the met. ropolitan railway station of that name. The houses are the highest in England —twelve stories—perbaps the highest in the world. Th ereare let by fiats upon a new associated principle; and Mr. Hankey has chosen for his own apartment the highest story, where he commands the purest air, with views of the park, Surrey Hill and northern heights. The suites of apartments are so eagerly sought after by those who wish to avoid the cares of house-keep- ing that Mr. Hankey is building a second block of houses twelve stories high. The tenants are chiefly bachel- ors, who occupy a bed-room and sitting room; there are also suites of 10 rooms. Elevators, of course, travel to each story and electric bells and speak- ing tubes are inevery room. There, is a ‘“‘wine cellar’ for each tenant; the male servants are in liveries; the females wear ancat and uniform dress ; and one quarterly payment covers the expense of servants, taxes, gas, water, and indeed every item of house- keeping even down to the insurance of furniture.
