ENGLISH GRAIN MARKETS.
A telegram to the New York press, dated London, Nov. 13th, quotes from the weekly review of the Mark Lane Ex- press of Monday as follows:—‘ The grain trade continues to be marked by much uncertainty, depression and general want ef confidence, caused by heavy imports of foreign wheat, not only into London, but into most of our principal ports, and as buyers are influenced more by the present plenty. than by future moderation, a desire to avoid absolute inaction has brought about a pressure to sell on the part of holders which has exercised a weakening effect on prices. Three weeks of unpre- cedentedly heavy shipments from America are now on the point.of arriving, and the possibility of higher prices for the present is exceedingly remote. But at the same time it is to America we must look for our supply of red wheat during the winter months, and a further decline of a few shillings here may very possibly induce shippers to turn their attention to maize, which is relatively dearer than wheat, after having fed our markets with as much of the latter as it will take without repletion America is doubtless cognizant of the fact that she holds the reins of prices here, and will certainly exercise her knowledge to the best advantage. The demand for white wheat has been rather better, owing to some continental enquiry, and exports have been slowly but steadily increasing during the past three weeks, as the results of the French harvest, upon threshing, seem to indicate that it has been rather Over-estimated, Arrivals from America continue moderate, while the blockade of the Black Sea ports having closed the gates on our supplies of sound corn. this variety has been sold at 383 per quarter. In oats there is very little quotable change, although dealers have operated with con- siderable reserve. At the moment barley appears to hold the strongest position, and malting sorts have advanced Is per quar- ter, while grinding qualities are held with much firmness and fully maintain late rates. With moderate arrivals at ports of call, the floating cargo trade has been about Is per quarter, Maize has improved about 6d per quarter, Barley is steady.’

Judging by the rise and fall of revenue receipts, the times are getting no better in the United States, despite the brief spurte of activity this falland the loud outery over it. The officiai figures obtained from

faliing off of revenue from all sources. Phe receipts for the first four months of the present fiscial year amounted to $93, - 288,000, against $97,156 000 in the corres- ponding period last year. Here we have a decrease of $3,868,000, and. what is more. a decrease in every department. In the last four months tho Customs’ receipts have been $286 32911 less, the internal revenue receipts $641,069 24 less, and the miscellaneous receipts $2 94(),025 30 less than in the corresponding four months of last year. Commenting on these facts, the Chicago “ Tribune” says :—Jn a country where the amount of revenue cheating is great but uncertain, and exact inferance, cannot be arawn from this decrease of revenue as would be pos-ible in France or England, but coupled with other potent facts it shows that the ability of tho people to consume the various commodities of commerce is still increasing.

Rain has fallen in thess parts of India which were suff-ring from famine and threatened with the total destruction ot the crops, and already there is so great a feeling of relief that the Mayor of London has been notified that he need not keep the Mansion House fund open any longer. That fund amounted to 2} willion pounds, an enormous sum to be raised by volun- tary subscription. Some say that there need be no famine were the Indian Gov. ernment todo tsduty to the people of India, and one paper asks—-

A Coxious Case.—in Paris, recently, a desperate criminal was found guilty of murder, but the foreman of the Jury, in
viving the written verdict, according to law, ‘, Yes, by a majority” spelt the latter word ‘‘Magorite.’’ The Court of Cassation held that the mispelling was a fatal objec. tion, and granted a new trial, in which the Jury found extenuating circumstances, and instead of capital punishment. the
convict got off with penal servitude for life.

It isa colossal merble statue of a nude youth, of which the lower part of the legs and the right forearm are wanting; absent, also, is ythe form of a little boy which had well The sculpture is exquisite, and the head is marked by the finest and most spiritualized youthful beauty. The state perfectly agrees with the description of a marble Hermes carrys ing the boy Dionysius, by Praxiteles, which was recorded by the historical Pausanians as a gift to the temple in his day. This.of course, rinks among the most valuable legacies which Grecian art has left us,
