HOW TO PREACH, GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY aK FOR—CLEARNESS, CERTAINTIES, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL FIRE WANTED—LECTURING AND PREAOH- ING.

By common people we meup, not the educated or the ignorant, the rich or the sufleriog poor, buc the middie class of society who are neither rich nor poor, learned or igvorant, but intelligent and in comfortable circum- stances—comprising the vast majority of all our people, and from whose homes are to come three-fourths of the lead- ing men of the future—the most important part of society.

1. Preach not learnediy, gently. Give the results not its methods. Learning and cleur- pess are not the same. The penple do not want to bear a mao tell bow many timesa word orears in the Hebrew or Greek. We recently hoard an honest, scholarly man _ belore 4 congregation of common people, with intense earnestness use Hebrew, Greek, Latin and French words They doubtless thought bim learned and dall. Not long ago we listened to a sermon form acultured young preacher, just home from Germany, before a congregs- tion mostly of farmers, upon the “subjective influence of Christin copsciousness,” and as an honest deacon said, “the more he unfolded, it the more he covered it up.” What culture good tor if not to make truth plain? 2. Preach not theologically, but practicaily. Thevlogical preaching is seeking io prove a doctrine for the sake of proving it—which is lecturing, not preachiog. Practical preaching is the unfolding of some great doctrine in ite relations to human life. Tne people like to hear about the greut foundamental truths when they are made to touch human experience, but when they are only displays of metaphysical, logical, rhetorical or exegetical skill, then they become like all technical addresses, dull. The preacher has no right to turn him self into a lecturer before he is called to a theological profe-sorsbip. One ot the most learned and logical preachers in our land, who « few yeurs ago was One of the most brilliant and p pular of our preachers, has lost his hold upea the people simply because he has turned bis sermons into lectures, and seeks to prove the truth rather thau apply the truth to men’s souls. Our pews are 80 empty because so many midisters are trying to be small theo- logical professor 1 ather than proclaimer of the Gospel. We are never to preach a trath for the mere sake of provingit, but for the sake of its he'pfuiness to m°p.

3. Presey not negatively, but posi- tively, The people are never drawn or beld by doubts, supposition-, or speculations. L[ndentity has no power with the masses except as it is « positive negative. It is an as-erting sk: pticism which draws me. So in the pulpit: the majority of men are too busy and Ured to investigate trath for themselves; they look to religion a4 ia medicine as in luw, to their teachers.

4. Preach not formally, but esroestly. A man may be int Higept and pac ical and positive, bus cold and duli ; you have heard such meo—good, honest, clear-headed and faithful, but powerless because there was nO carnestness in them. By earnestoess is not meant mere poise Or excited declams- tion, but a passion of soul which fires the brain, the will, the heart, the body, and brings the whole mao into av excitement uuder the truth. power. The people enjoy it. It is the highest arc, in song, in the actor, on the platform, in the pulpit. A few

years ago | passed an evening in a cultured New Enviand city, with one of the most learned, unemotional of our American college presidents. ‘The question arose where we should spend our time.
