The Cumberland News gives a thrill-}

ing account of the heroic deed oi the engineer, B. F. Prichard, in the recent accident on the Pittsburg division ot

the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. He saw just ahead a large piece of rock

that had rolled down the side of the mountain upon the track. (Quick as thought he sprang from his seat, with- out relaxing his hold on the throttle, jammed it and put on the air breaks. ‘The next instant the engine went crash- ing and grindiog over the rock, was thrown from the track, and turned over and over. When the train men and passenvers reached the battered wreck which had a moment before been a splendid piece of machinery the form the brave engineer was found standing erect, as if his engine was rifinine: smoothly over the rails. One hand was grasping the throttle, and

the other the handle of the air- brea's with a clutch that could not be loosed. His lips were pressed

closely together, and his face wore a determined but anxious look, and penetrating his side was the polished iron handle of the reverse bar. The engine in turning over had pressed him avainst the bar and he had ‘died at his post of duty. That the engineer’s action was successful in putting on the air brakes is known, for it saved the train from wreck, aud its sleeping human freight from death. Wheather he succeeded in throwing back the reverse bar is not known ; for though it was not reversed when the crash was over, it might have been before. It is probable that he saw that all |e could doin the brief moment between the the discovery and the coll- jsion was to close throttle and hold the air valve open long enough to insure the the patent brakes a full supply of conden- sed air.

A Strange Freak of Nature.

A remarkable monstrosity, or pers haps more properly, freak of develop- ment, was reported to us on the 27th ult. The subject is a child born Thurs- day last, about five miles from the city. The child is perfectly normal and na- tural with one exception, the walls or covering to the abdomen are transpar- rent. There is no thick outside skin or epidermis, but simply a fine bladder- like covering, which admits of a thorough inspection of the various organs. The entire contents of the abdomen lie in full view. We have been assiwred by physicians that such an anamalous development as in this case is unknown to them, and that, furthermore, the ‘ books’ do not record a similar case. The child is a male, first-born, weighs 10 pounds, seemingly well, and the son of youthful, robust, parents. Yesterday the father reported it and mother doing well, the child feeding from its mother’s breast as naturally as any other, and otherwise in perfect health. It may live, but the chances are against. We are indebted to Dr. S. N. Jordan, who called to see the child, for a report of the same.— Cleveland Herald.

Another Shooting Affray— Botsford Parish Scores One.

Doncuester, N. B., July 7.—Ilypo- lite Downing was committed to Dor- chester gaol on Saturday for an at- tempt to shoot Lewis Avard, of Bristol, Parish of Botsford, on Friday last. His will be another case for the approach- ing Suprame Court.

The difficulty between the two arose in this way: It seems that Avard bought Downing’s property at Sheriif’s sale, and on attempting to remove some of it, was forbidden by Downing, who said he would shoot Avard if he did not go away. Avard took no notice of his threat. Downing went to the house and came out with a gun. Avard closed with him before he could use it, and in the struggle Downing managed to discharge the gun, the charge blow- ing the side off Avard’s hat. His escape was certainly miraculous. Downing -was committed by Patrick Hebert, Esq.,

Opium is eating up_his his life, and he will not last long. are of course, all gone. A number of bones, suppesed to be human, were also found in the vicinity, and upon the adjacent slopes there is abundant evidence of the previous

occupation of the waters in the shape of shells, as well as the occasional finding of petrified fish. That this

valley has once been an inland sea is ad- mitted by geologists, but that these waters are navigated by Celestial seamen one or two thousand years ago has never been claimed even by Chinese themselves. But these same people do claim to have been the original discoverers of this country,and this find seems to give color to the claim by them that vessels of theirs have been wrecked on the coast, and that portions of the crews have returned to China; but that the wreck itsolf sheuld be located, and that this location should prove to be in Tulare County, is surely an interesting fact, in- voting the inspection of the curious and the solution of the scientific.
