The Railway Re-adjustment.

Ix reply to the Toronto Globe, the Mail says :—

‘ Tt assumes that all the vacancies made have been filled up with Conservatives,and that’ Ministers’ relatives and ‘‘ Conserva tive brawlers” are filling the line. Nothing could be more misleading. The Opposition papers do not furnish the fullest ‘informa- tion on this subject, even in the east. It is from the Conservative journals that the Globe gets its facts, and if it were honest eneugh to confess it, it would admit the fact that the complaint is that the dismissed men are all, or nearly all, Conservatives, and that a reduction of pay has been ad- opted all round without any exception. Men are dismissed, and their places are NOT filled at all. No one regrets having to do this more than Sir Charles Tupper. He is almost risking his political life in this ef- fort to fulfill his promises and save the conntry some portion of the loss on the Intercolonia! railway, which in two years amounted io the fearful sum of eleven hundred theusand dollars. A speedy stop must be put to this sort of thing. As our correspondent points out, the Intercolonial railway under the late Administration was inade, or attempted to be made, a gigantic political engine. But the attempt in great part failed. The expenses swelled up; salaries were in- creased ; running expenses increased ; con- tracts were made political footbails, and much work was done without contracts at all. Sir Charles Tupper is determined that the deficit shall be reduced; that money shall be saved semehow. If the road was run by a company it could at this time get men in bundreds for less salaries than are paid the present employes, even at the reduced rate. That they should com- plain is natural. But that Sir Charles Tupper should so energetically carry out his policy of economy at so much evident risk to his own political future, is an evi- dence of his high determination of charac- ter, and is a policy which should meet with the appprobation of all Canadians.

This is we!l as far as it goes. But the true cause of thedissatsifaction with the re- adjustment is—not the economical policy of Government. Every one—at least every- one worth regarding is pleased with it. But it is the blind, headlong, indiscriminate way’ the economical changes were made

which gives offence. 8 - In this Island dead men have received

appointments; while some of the oldest and most capable men on the road have been discharged. Strong opponents of the Gov- ernment, who have been in office but a short time, have taken the places of offli- cials, neutral or Conservative in politics, who were employed on the road since its opening, and are now sent about their business. It is of such wrong acts as these that the Conservatives of this Province justly complain. Of course the Minister of Railways (though responsible) can- not properly be blamed for them. He cannot be expected to at- tend to details which his Superintend ents are paid to see after. But if he per- mits Mr. Schreiber to go on as he has began, the support of the Government will undoubtedly be weakened. In the interests of the Government, we advise the exercise of more discriminative care respecting the changes of the future.

We learn that Nicholas Conroy, Esq., has been appointed Registrar of Deeds, in- stead of Benjamin DesBrisay, Esq., who has been transferred to the Land Office.

Mr. Conroy resigned his seat in the Gov- ernment, and Mr. Peter Gavin, the junior member for Tignish, has been appointed to

Perer Cavin, a farmer, of London, On- tario, has a son who is a somnambulist, and who, on Wednesday night last, walked out of a second story window and broke both of his arms. The fall didmot waken him, and it was not till he had gone quite a dis- tance, and jumped over a high fence, that he was captured and awakened.—Exchange.

Weare glad to learn that diffienl- ties are all removed, and to-day the works present a scene of unusual activity. We would rather. see two or three governments upset than to know that these works were in the least hampered, and from the very first murmurings of discontent we felt assured that the Government would make matters right. It would, however, have been, bad for the Company had the Grits been in power.—Truyro Sun.

Gladstone on the ‘Church England.

Mr. Gladstone recently spoke as_ follows aboui-the Church of England: ‘‘ We all of us believe that the difficulties of the Church of England are great. She has had ditli- culties to encounter, and she may have more; she has had controversies within and without, and we cannot hope that the voice of controversy will all at once be lulled. — It is not difficult to find matter for eriticism in her laws and in her actions. But, wish- ing above all things to knew the truth, and not wishing to conceal from ourselves any of our defects, it would be shortsighted policy to dose, evenif there were no other reason. I believe that we who are here as- sembled, and thousands, tens of thousands and millions, outside these walls are united in the firm belief that the Church of Eng- land has still a great work to perform for herself, for the people, and for Christen- dom at large.”

“A Night in Scotland!”

The ‘‘ Fairbairn Family” will give two of their popular entertainments on Wed- nesday and Thursday evenings next in the Market Hall Speaking of their recent performance in Boston, the Journal says :

‘‘The Fairbairn Family gave one of their unique entertainments in the Association Hall last evening. All the seats and stand- ing room were oceupied. The prograinme consisted of eighteen numbers, and almost as many encores. The greatest enthusiasin prevailed, the entire audience remaining until ten o’clock, and reluctantly leaving even then. There was a delegation present from the Caledonian Club, in full Highland costume, who were highly applauded as they entered the Hall just after the singing of ‘A man’s a man for a’ that.” The ex- planations of the origin and incidents of the songs, by Mr.. Angus Fairbairn, were of equal interest with the rendering of the music. No entertainment of the kind, of equal merit, has been given in Boston by ether parties, and it is to be hoped. that the public may have a speedy opportunity to hear ‘these justly celebrated vocalists again.”

Tur statements of a reckless contemporary that the City Council bought 1efined iron for bolts for the addition to Pownal Whart at five cents, while iron costing three cents would have been quite good enough, is entirely in- correct. The price paid by the Council for the iron referred to, was tree cents per pound —and not five cents. .

Tue steamer Valetta arrived from Montreal this morning with a cargo of general merchan- dize, and after discharging sailed for Pictou. Tuer immigration into the United States frem Europe has this year largely exceeded any period since the depression set in, a fact which may be attributed to the gradual re- vival of industries on this Continent at a time when the crisis is being most severely felt in the Old World. In May the arrivals at New York were 18,109 emigrants against 12,213 in May last year; an increase of about 50 per cent. ; and in the year ending June Ist, there arrived at New York from Europe, 92,801 emigrants, against 71,091 in the preceding year. The greater num- ber of those who emigrated to the United States last month were Germans, Irish, English, Swedes and Norwegians.
