readers a few of the do of s isaster which has s read deep gloom over the eoiiimunigl, buto which the incidents no soon told. Wednesday last at noon, whilst the Collins Liverpool on the 20th ult., was proceedin at the rats of 13 knots an hour, when with n 55 miles of Cape Race, she came in contact in a dense fog wl h the Iron French screw steamer Vesta, from St.’ Peters to Granville, by which the latter sustained considerable damage, having struck on the starboard how, about et a aft the cutwater. which made three large holes in the ship, two below the water. one of which was about 5; feet in length, and 1 or 15 in depth, leaving the whole outwater and stern of the iron steamer clean through the Arctic‘: side. It was not apprehended at first that the Arctic was much in nred, and a boat was lowered and sent under t to charge of the tint olicer to the assistance of the French steamer. But in a few minutes it was discovered that the Arctic had several l'eet water in the hold. and the pumps, which were worked by the machincr were set to work, the steamer being at the same time headed for the land. She had proceeded only about 15 miles when the water rose so as to extinguish the fires in the furnaces, when all hope of keeping her any time afloat was lost. In the meantime. as it was evident that all on board could not escape by the boats, the state oi the passengers and crew can be easier conceived than described. rs. Collins with her daughter, many other ladies and Mr Collins Jr. were placed in a boat, which, while being lowered, was swamped and nll perished except one lady who clung to a seaman. An- other best was lo\vered containing a party of ladies accompanied y .some gentlemen, a quantity of provisions bein thrown in; but having no seamen to row the at, it is feared they could not reach the coast, especially considering the teinpestuous weather since experienced. other boats, as will be seen by a communication to the Ame- rican Consul with 45 of the assengers and crew made the land. The orig boat capable of carrying over 50 persons remained oirdeck, and would probably be crowded on the vessel going down; but it is to be nred that it would go down with the ship. The thrcolifolioats furnished the only means of escape; but they could carry but a small portion of those on ho-.ii'd the stcainer. The pumps being worked by the iiiacliiiiery it was impossi- ble to stop the vcss to 0 Captain Luce had no ho is of the vessel remain- ing afloat any time, an when the boats were leaving. after the engines stopped, said he would remain in tlie'ship.
