Many Murders In Great Britain

LONDON tReui(-rsi There- liavc been 95 murders in Britain since January 1. compared with 46 killings for the same period last year. government officials said Monday.

More titan 50 murders have oc- curred in the 16 weeks since the death sentence was abolished for most murders. Children have been victims in 21 cases.

Police have solved all but eight of this year's killings. But of all the persons tried for murder only one still faces the death sentence. John Wilson Vickers is to die July 23 for the murder of a storekeeper during a robbery.

Monday night police at Cleck- heaton. 190 miles north of here, arrested a suspect in the latest child slaying-that of Joan Burton. 10. She was criminally assaulted and battered to death.

Cull Piles Are Blight Source

Late blight was found July 11 on a potato cull pue in Ling: Coun- ty. Nova Scotla. reports Weekly Potato Bulletin. No. 5.

The growth of tops lnthispnrfr icular cull pile was very dense but only one stalk was found infected. Blight had spread to two or three neighboring leaves but the lee- ions were small and sporulation was sparse. It was obvious that blight had only completed one gen- eration from the primary lesion. An early spring and a warm. dry June in Nova Scotia has favor- ed growth ao that the potato and tomato crops are unusually ad- vanced for the season of the year. The heavy rains experienced in some other parts of the Maritime Provinces have missed the An- napolis Valley. Conditions have been unfavorable for late blight development.

It is known that cull piles have been left at several warehouses in Prince Edward Island. Weather favourable to the dcvelopement of late blight now prevails and these piles may become dangerous sources for field infection at any moment. It is strongly recom. mended that warehouse operat- ors take immediate steps to don- troy these piles at once.

Flea beetles are becoming scarce but Colorado potato beet- le eggs are hatching and larvae are present in many fields. DDT will control them very effective-

Boys leave Camp Keir

A bright sun and a fair breeze from the water made the Camp- ers loathe to leave Camp Keir and head for town and country. city home and farm dwelling as the ten day Boys Camp concluded. Needless to say camp rolls and clothing were not as neatly packed for return as they had been on ar- rival. where packing had been per- formed by mother or under her watchful eye. But with pride there were packed Items more valuable to a young boy than bed clothing or shoes. These were boats. animals. or perhaps a cross or Bible scene carved out of wood in the handicraft class or a Camp Keir pennant made by youthful bands which will adorn the wall of some boy's room to remind him of the experiences of Camp. Above all the Director and Lea- ders will pray that each boy will carry back with him a feeling o f closer relation to the Saviour as a result of the Bible study period: camp fire devotions. and whole some Christian atmosphere.
