Death of a Modern Borgia

A TERRIBLE CONFESSION.

Harrrorp, May 16.—Lydia Sherman, the notorious Derby poisoner, died in the Connecticut State prison at Wethers- field to-day, where she was serving out a life sentence for the murder of her third husband, Horatio N. Sherman. She was fifty-four years of age. Her convietion in New Haven, in the spring of 1872 was mainly on the brilliant toxicological evidence of Professor Baker, then of the Yale Medical School, but now of the University of Pennsyl- vania. A Connecticut Statute, which permits a verdict of murder in the sec- ond degree when the evidence is pure- lv cireumstancial and not equal in the minds of the jurymen to the testimony of two direct witnesses, offered the jury a way to escape from hanging a wo- man, but Judge L. F. S. Foster, the acting Vice-President during Johnson's term in the White House, expressed his regret when he pronounced the sen- tence that he could not send her to the gallows. In January, 1873, she made a confession of the murderous crimes which she had committed, confirming the belief that her last» husband was not by any means the first person for whom she had mixed the poison bowl. According to this statement she was born in Burlington, N. J., and learned to be a tailoress at New Brunswick, where she also joined the Methodist Chureh. In this church she met Ed- ward Struck, whom she married, and by whom she became the mother of several children. They lived together eighteen years. Struck was appointed a New York policeman and stationed at Manhattanville. Mrs. Sherman’s story is that he was finally discharged from the forte upon an unjust charge of cowardice. He became dishearten- ed, would not work and took to his bed, and even made efforts to commit sui- cide. The police captain advised that he should be sent to an asylum, but a certain sergeant recommended a dose of poison, so the wife bought 10 cents’ worth of arsenic and mixed it with his oatmeal gruel, and the next morning she was a widow. In the confession she respectively speaks of Struck asa devoted Christian. Soon after his death she made up her mind that her two ghildren, a girl of six and a boy of four,, would be better off if they were out of the way, and, after thinking the matter over for several days she made them some of the same kind of gruel their father had eaten. The doctor said Sthey died of gastric fever. She continued to keep house with her re- maining four children. The oldest, a boy of fourteen, named George Whit- field, was taken sick with painter's colic, the doctor said. As he did net get better his mother became discouraged and mixed arsenic with his sea. When the boy died the doctor still clung to his theory of painter’s colic. When another young daughter, who is re- ferred to as the happiest child her mother saw, was taken down with the chills and fever, Mrs. Struck became discouraged again, and put some of the ever-ready arsenic in her medicine. The child died four days afterwards. The eldest daughter died not long after- wards, but in this case, the confession says, death was natural—at least, the mother did not give her anything the doctors did not order. Mrs. Struck had supported herself so far—queerly as it may sound—by going out as a nurse. The bereaved and now childless widow was at length free to go into other pursuits. After being employed in several households, she became the housekeeper of an old man in Hun- tington, Conn., by the name of Hurl- burt. He had some property, and in a few days after she came into his house he married her. This took place in November, 1868, and the happy bride- groom lived fourteen months. He be- came sick after drinking cider in which he had put saleratus, but the confession denies that its author had anything to do with hisdeath. He had madea will in her favor three months after their their marriage, and the Connectieut »cople always believed that his wife had a hand in the old man’s taking off. A. Derby painter, Horatio N. Sher- man, who had been, left a widower, with several small children, next mar- ried her, in September, 1870. His youngest son fell sick about two months after the marriage, and Mrs. Sherman says she was full of trouble, and thought he would be better off if she gave him something to put him out of the way. She put some arsenic, which they had in the house to kill rats, in his milk. and he went off at onee. Things, however, grew worse. Sherman quar- relled with his former wife's mother, spent his money, and took to drink. His daughter Ada was sick, and he drank up the brandy which had been purchased for her, and told his wife to yay the doctor herself. .This made Mrs. Sherman feel bad, and her only means of relief was to mix arsenic with the girl’s tea. Ada died the next morning. Mr. Sherman then began acting worse than ever, drinking very

hard, and leaving his family unpro- vided for. He sold his wife’s piano, and went on a prolonged debauch with the proceeds, according to her account. Having been taken sick, she gave him some brandy in which she had put the usual dose of arsenic, iftending, as she says, only to make him sick of Jiquor. He drank more themext day, and died in twenty-four hours afterwards. During her imprisonmont, Mys. Sher- man behaved quietly and obediently. She professed to have hecome religious, and to be penitent for her awtul crimes, Her health was not good, and she was allowed many privileges, taking advan- tage of which she contrived to escape on the night of May 20, 1877, and to make her way to Providence, by way of Hartford. She was recaptured about a week afterwards, largely through her own carelessness. It is generally = posed that the escape was effected only by the over-confidence of the prison matron in Mrs, Sherman’s penitence— if, indeed, the ; nothing worse than too great credulity.
